Job description
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Microbiology Responsibilities
  • Conduct microbiological testing on water, food, and environmental samples following approved standards (e.g., ISO, APHA, ASTM).
  • Prepare and maintain culture media, reagents, standards, and required laboratory equipment.
  • Identify, isolate, and quantify microorganisms using conventional and rapid techniques.
  • Support environmental monitoring, including air and surface sampling.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of results, observations, and quality records with proper audit trails.
  • Participate in equipment calibration, method validation, proficiency testing, and quality control programs.
  • Maintain laboratory hygiene and comply with biosafety and ISO/IEC 17025 requirements.
  • Assist in developing and validating new microbiological test methods and workflows.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of laboratory efficiency, workflow, and technical performance.
  • Provide technical input for troubleshooting, reporting, and addressing the client.
2. PCR Responsibilities
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative PCR (qPCR/ddPCR) assays for DNA/RNA detection in non-clinical samples.
  • Handle low-risk wastewater and environmental samples potentially containing viral genetic material.
  • Conduct manual and automated DNA/RNA extraction and purification.
  • Establish, implement, and maintain PCR protocols and best practices.
  • Identify workflow gaps, equipment needs, and opportunities to improve throughput.
  • Prepare, handle, and store PCR reagents, consumables, and samples appropriately.
  • Monitor PCR consumables and PPE stock levels and coordinate replenishment.
  • Evaluate PCR results and identify potential issues such as inhibition, extraction errors, or amplification anomalies.
  • Perform routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting of PCR instruments and related equipment.
Qualifications
  • 1 to 3 years of experience in PCR analysis and method development (qPCR/ddPCR; viral RNA/DNA preferred).
  • Degree in Microbiology, Biomedical Science, Life Science, Biochemistry, or equivalent (relevant experience may substitute).
  • Experience in microbiological laboratory testing is an added advantage.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
