Job summary

A leading freight operator in the drybulk sector is seeking an in-house Junior Legal Counsel in Singapore. The ideal candidate must be a UK/Singapore-qualified solicitor with 2-4 years PQE in maritime law, specializing in dispute resolution and charterparty disputes. Candidates should demonstrate excellent drafting skills and sound business judgment while being diligent and organized. This role includes managing SwissMarine’s legal affairs and handling arbitration claims. This position offers flexibility to support the Europe office.

Qualifications

  • 2-4 years of post-qualification experience (PQE) in maritime law.
  • Experience in dispute resolution with a focus on charterparty disputes.
  • Knowledge of handling club claims (P&I) is an advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the handling of SwissMarine’s legal affairs.
  • Monitor legal developments affecting the Company’s business.
  • Handle claims and ensuing arbitration with external lawyers.

Job description

SwissMarine is a highly reputed and leading freight operator & shipping company operating in the drybulk sector worldwide.

We are looking for a UK/Singapore-qualified solicitor with 2-4 years PQE in maritime law and dispute resolution, with a focus on charterparty disputes.

The suitable candidate will have excellent drafting skills, along with sound business judgment and strategic thinking, be diligent, well organized and able to manage numerous projects or work tasks simultaneously under deadline pressure. They will have good interpersonal skills and a commitment to professionalism and team-working, the ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion.

Key responsibilities include assisting with the handling of SwissMarine’s legal affairs generally, knowledge of charter party disputes in particular laytime and demurrage, knowledge and experience of handling club claims (P&I) is an advantage, including monitoring legal developments inclusive of new regulations that impact on the Company’s business, and providing internal updates. Independent handling of claims and any ensuing arbitration with external lawyers/solicitors.

Requirements:

  • In-house Junior Legal Counsel, UK / Singapore-qualified and practising solicitor specialising in Shipping Litigation, 2-4 years PQE, to be based in Singapore but with flexibility to support our Europe office (i.e. during Europe time zone).
