Job description

The Singapore American School seeks enthusiastic certified teachers to join the SAS team next year as math assistant teachers (ATs). Our ATs will serve in our new math tutoring center as well as alongside our classroom teachers supporting the math needs of our students. Successful candidates must have an infectious enthusiasm for math and be willing to engage both high-performing and struggling students in mathematics learning. We are only seeking applicants who feel that you can make math both relevant and fun for students.

Responsibilities

The Mathematics Assistant Teachers will be based primarily in our math tutoring center in the library; supporting students ages 15-18 years old with mathematics content ranging from PreAlgebra to Calculus and Statistics. Assistant teachers will also participate in math department Professional Learning Community (PLC) teams and add support in classrooms when needed. Daily needs in the tutoring center can vary, so flexibility is a must for the preferred candidates.

The actions listed below each category are examples of what the Mathematics Assistant Teacher will typically do in a given week.

Support for Learning
  • Develop effective relationships with children, teachers, and sometimes parents to support a conducive learning environment
  • Support students who voluntarily drop in or are directed to our math tutoring center area with mathematics questions
  • Participate in classes as needed, mostly algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus classes to understand the curriculum and to assist classroom teachers where needed
  • Participate in teacher PLC team meetings to better understand the curriculum, assignments, and assessments
  • Occasionally lead pre-teach, re-teach, and assessment remediation with small groups of students (as requested by the PLC teams)
  • Be willing to proctor mathematics tests for students if needed
  • Provide feedback to teachers regarding individual student learning as appropriate
  • Participate in Office of Learning and division recommended/required professional development and attend relevant training
Supervision and Student Care
  • Ensure children’s safety during times of supervision
  • Assist teacher(s) and enforce protocols during times of emergency (e.g., during fire drills, during lock-downs, evacuation)
  • Ensure SAS child safeguarding standards are being followed at all times

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in mathematics or other major with strong math foundations
  • Teaching certification either locally or internationally
  • Strong academic and/or occupational background in mathematics (with a strong proficiency in Calculus)
  • The candidate will be required to complete and pass a math proficiency test, as well as demonstrate their approach to tutoring students via scenario-based questions, as part of the interview process.
  • Experience or strong desire to work with students of all math backgrounds
  • Strong verbal and written English skills
  • Google Suite skills, strong IT proficiency
  • Team-spirited, driven, and "go the extra mile" attitude for kids is essential
  • Growth mindset about students' ability to learn math
  • Willingness to assist in classrooms where students need extra support
  • Must be flexible and be willing to adjust to new changes or ideas
