Job summary

A leading biotech firm is seeking a Field Application Scientist in Bioinformatics to provide pre- and post-sales technical expertise. The successful candidate will partner with the Sales team and customers, delivering technical consultations throughout the customer journey. This role requires a PhD in Life Sciences / Bioinformatics and experience with genomic data analysis. The candidate will also provide support in experimental design and build strong technical relationships with customers while ensuring successful outcomes in their projects.

Job description

We are looking for a Field Application Scientist, Bioinformatics, to partner closely with our Sales team and customers. You’ll provide pre- and post-sales technical expertise across our sequencing platforms and software — helping users design experiments, analyse data, and achieve successful outcomes while strengthening long-term relationships.

Duties
  • Partner with the Sales team to provide pre- and post-sales technical expertise across Oxford Nanopore sequencing platforms and software.
  • Deliver technical consultations throughout the customer journey, including experimental design, workflow optimisation, and data analysis guidance.
  • Act as a trusted technical advisor, supporting customers with best practices for Oxford Nanopore technologies and successful solution adoption.
  • Deliver technical presentations, trainings, and on-site engagements at customer sites, key accounts, and scientific meetings.
  • Build and maintain strong technical relationships with customers to ensure effective implementation and optimal scientific outcomes.
  • Provide comprehensive pre- and post-sales technical support to Channel Partners to drive customer success and business growth.
  • Accurately document customer interactions, technical enquiries, and follow-up actions in the CRM system.
  • Monitor competitive technologies and market trends, sharing insights with commercial and product teams.
  • Collaborate with the regional Technical Trainer and internal teams to deliver structured technical training programmes.
  • Back-up coverage to adjacent territories as required.
Qualifications/education
  • PhD in Life Sciences / Bioinformatics (or equivalent experience in a commercial, customer-facing scientific role).
Experience
  • Prior experience in a Field Applications Scientist, technical support, or customer-facing scientific role.
  • Hands-on experience with experimental design and genomic data analysis (e.g. whole-genome and transcriptome sequencing).
  • Experience with long-read sequencing technologies is desirable.
  • Experience supporting customers in pre- and post-sales technical environments is an advantage.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
  • Strong foundation in genetics, genomics, molecular biology, bioinformatics, or related disciplines.
  • Practical experience with NGS data analysis workflows such as genome assembly, variant calling, structural variant analysis, transcriptomics.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming or scripting languages (e.g. Python, R, Perl) and comfortable working in UNIX/Linux environments.
  • Experience with high-performance computing environments; familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g. AWS) is desirable.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and customer-focused mindset.
Other requirements
  • Field-based role with frequent local customer visits and occasional overnight travel (up to ~40%).
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trusted technical relationships.
  • Highly motivated, self-driven, and able to work independently while collaborating across teams.Commitment to maintaining high technical standards and customer satisfaction.
