The Role
The Deputy Head of Senior School (Academic) is responsible for the strategic leadership and day to day management of academic provision in the Senior School. A member of the Senior School Leadership Team (SSLT), they will be responsible for the planning, monitoring and promotion of the academic life of the Senior School. They will lead on several strategic initiatives and will have responsibility for creating a bridge between the Institute@Tanglin and the Senior School to support the intellectual journey of our students. They will also be expected to contribute to the day-to-day management of the Senior School, as well as the development of Senior School policies, practices and procedures to ensure that the school mission, vision and core aims are met.
The role reports to the Head of Senior School.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Leadership
- Work closely with the Head of Senior School, Deputy Head (Pastoral), Deputy Head (Co-Curriculum) and other members of SSLT to support and implement the Senior School’s mission, vision and aims.
- Recommend to the Head of School future academic priorities that meet the academic needs of all students.
- Work with members of SSLT and other senior colleagues across the school to develop, refine and implement the school’s policies and procedures, with a particular focus on academic matters.
- Lead on all academic areas of the Senior School Improvement Plan.
- Lead Heads of Middle School, Upper School, and Sixth Form, as well as Assistant Head (Academic) and Heads of Faculty / Department in setting and meeting agreed academic priorities.
- Lead a culture of aspiration and excellence in student outcomes, demonstrating a relentless drive for improvement for all students, informed by the most up to date educational research.
- Work with the Head of School to manage the Senior school budget, building projects, recruitment, staffing and timetable.
2.Academic
- Lead the planning and implementation of a constantly evolving curriculum in the Senior School, ensuring subject leaders are supported to ensure that Tanglin students are taught the very best that has been thought, written and said in each academic domain.
- Inform the Head of Senior School and SSLT of current research, trends and issues relevant to the academic life of the school to facilitate future planning.
- Take responsibility for the quality of teaching and learning in the Senior School, equipping middle leaders to quality assure teaching and learning in their teams, and ensure oversight of teacher performance across the school.
- Ensure consistent language of learning is embedded across the Senior School, and that students are rewarded and celebrated for embracing and demonstrating the characteristics of an effective learner.
- Keep abreast of current educational research and lead a culture of professional curiosity in the Senior School. Ensure all teachers are exposed to the most up to date thinking in teaching and learning and are supported through high quality CPD to implement this practice in the classroom.
- Ensure the Institute@tanglin provides a stimulating and accessible programme to support the intellectual journey of our students.
- Work closely with the Head of Examinations and the Academic Office to ensure the smooth running of external and internal examinations. Support the Head of Examinations in any dealings with parents in relation to external examinations.
- Lead and manage the preparation of the Senior School for external inspection.
3.Key Relationships
- Work in partnership with the Assistant Head (Academic) to drive constant improvement tothe academic provision of the Senior School.
- Be a supportive and valuable member of the Senior School Leadership Team, contributing to all strategic direction, in collaboration with the other members of the team.
- Work in conjunction with the Head of Senior School and other Deputy Heads (Pastoral and Co-Curriculum)to ensure strategic direction is aligned across all areas of the senior school.
- Work closely with the Director of Learning as a member of the Tanglin Academic and Technology for Learning (TfL) Committees, as well as the Whole School Deputy Academic team with Infants and Juniors.
- Work closely with, and support, the Heads of Middle and Upper School and the Head of Sixth Form on all academic matters, including curriculum, homework, teaching and learning, assessment, transition, and options processes.
- Lead and manage the Heads of Faculty, Head of Exams, Curriculum Office, Technology for Learning and Data & Timetabling.
- Work closely with the Head of Digital Learning and Innovation to offer thought leadership in the continued growth of digital strategy in the senior school.
- Work closely with the IB Coordinator to ensure the effective running of the IBDP.
- Work with the Head of Senior School on all aspects of Senior school staffing including the recruitment and selection process.
- Work closely with the Director of Scholarship, Inquiry and Partnerships to create opportunities through the Institute for our students and staff, and to be a key member of the Institute Committee.
- Play a leading role in sustaining and nurturing the partnership between home and school.
4.General
- Be an excellent teacher with a passion for pedagogy and learning and teach at a level to be agreed with the Head of Senior School.
- Be a visible presence across the Senior School for students, staff and parents.
- Participate in co-curriculum activities across the school at a level to be agreed with the Head of Senior School.
- Model a balanced approach to academic, pastoral and co-curricular commitments.
- Together with SSLT, create and support a culture of safeguarding and child protection, reinforcing the key schoolwide focus on keeping children safe and being responsible for reporting any concerns about a child to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
