Job description
How to boldly stand out in your job search
How to boldly stand out in your job search

- From the years 2015 to 2017, I was rejected by over 200 companies for jobs. Here are two things that I decided to do differently in 2017 that helped me secure a role. Number one was I decided to share openly on the LinkedIn platform through this post. I was super direct about exactly what I was looking for and when I was looking for it by. This helped other people in my network and other networks know exactly how to help me. The reason why I encourage you to be explicit about what you're looking for is sometimes people want to help you, but they don't know how. This helps people, whether in your network or other networks, identify exactly how to help you. Two weeks after writing that post, the LinkedIn CEO at the time, Jeff Weiner, engaged with the post through this comment. This attracted a lot of recruiters and hiring managers to my post. However, a lot of them did explain that they were fully hired at that time in November or December timeframe, 2017. A Microsoft recruiter reached out and said she was fully hired, however, she did like my tenacity. You want to make sure that you remain top of mind for recruiters. You can do this by engaging with their LinkedIn content, following up with them when they ask you for further information, like resumes, or checking in on them every couple of months. For example, the Microsoft recruiter shared with me that she wanted to understand a bit more about the careers that I was interested in, so we spoke about this. A couple of months later, she was hiring for a new opportunity and she reached out to me because I was top of mind. I then got the opportunity to apply and interview for a position at Microsoft, and I secured that position for summer 2018. So I encourage you to consider doing these things, sharing openly about exactly what you're looking for so that people know how to help you in your job search, and also ensuring that you're following up or keeping the conversation going. This can look like engaging in the recruiter or hiring manager's posts or checking in or following up with them every couple of months.
