Job description

The Assistant Manager of Theatre operations leads all technical aspects of theatre shows, focusing on automation, rigging, and safety. This role manages a skilled team, ensures system reliability, supports creative integration, and oversees maintenance, training and event set‑ups. Collaborating across departments, the Assistant Manager will drive operational excellence and continuous improvement in delivering world‑class performances for guests.

Key Responsibilities
Technical Operations Oversight
  • Ensure all theatre technical systems (automation, rigging, lighting, audio, video, special effects) are operational and meet Resort standards.
  • Oversee pre-show, during-show, and post-show checks for automation and venue systems.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for technical issues during live performances and rehearsals.
  • Coordinate with Creative, Stage Management, and Production teams to adapt to schedule changes or technical challenges.
Automation and Rigging Focus
  • Oversee safe operation, programming, and maintenance of theatre automation systems (e.g. performer flying rigs, flybar systems).
  • Ensure all aspects of the automation system are tested, documented, and safely executed during performances.
  • Supervise rigging installations, inspections, and load testing in compliance with international and local codes.
  • Lead troubleshooting and provide expertise for automation system issues or malfunctions.
Technical Management and Planning
  • Direct and execute Technical Manager responsibilities and prepare detailed operation plans for medium-to-large events as required by clients (internal and external) or as directed.
  • Act as the key technical representative during new show development phases.
  • Review creative and production concepts, advise on automation and technical feasibility.
  • Lead commissioning, programming, and technical rehearsals for new productions.
  • Maintain documentations and contingency plans.
  • Manage the venue’s technical team by assigning daily duties, ensuring adequate coverage across rehearsals, shows, and maintenance windows.
  • Coordinate additional manpower or vendor support for event-related technical needs.
  • Ensure that event setups and strikes are safely executed without impacting theatre operations or resident show readiness.
Team Leadership and Performance
  • Lead and motivate events and show teams to ensure cost‑effective, high‑quality productions.
  • Reduce costs and increase revenue to support RWS Entertainment’s business objectives.
  • Foster collaboration and cross‑training to build multi‑skilled technical teams.
Training, Safety and Compliance
  • Conduct training sessions on automation and theatre technical systems.
  • Assess technician skill gaps and recommend targeted training.
  • Direct toolbox talks, safety briefings, and ensure risk assessments, safe work procedures, and permits‑to‑work are in place.
  • Act as the venue safety champion for automation‑related risks.
  • Conduct risk assessments and other statutory workplace safety and health (WSH) reports as required.
  • Enforce team compliance with Resort, Universal Destination Xperience (UDX), WSH, show/event procedures, manufacturer’s guidelines and local regulations where applicable.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree / Diploma / WSQ Equivalent in Technical Theatre, Theatrical Management, or a related field supplemented by courses in Electronics, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • With Degree / Diploma / WSQ Equivalent: 8 years of related industry experience in facets of technical event production and multiple‑venue management, with no less than 3 years of experience in managing technical personnel.
  • Without Diploma / WSQ Equivalent: 10 years of related industry experience in facets of technical event production and multiple‑venue management, with no less than 2 years of experience in managing technical personnel.
  • Strong knowledge of industry standards and safety protocol.
  • Experience in entertainment equipment and systems including Staging, Lighting, Sound, Audio‑visual, Rigging, Show Control, Special Effects (SFX) and Automation.
