We are searching for a researcher in Visual Computing for a novel EU Horizon 2020 project (Scan4Reco) starting in October 2015. The ideal candidate should have a Ph.D. or a Master Degree in Computer Science, and previous experience in Visual Computing, possibly with a focus on photometric analysis and/or pattern classification. High motivation, interest, and previous experience in the Cultural Heritage domain will also be appreciated.

The main tasks related to this position include the implementation and testing of multimodal acquisition setups to capture artifact surfaces (including multispectral Reflectance Transformation Imaging, microprofilometry, 3D scanning) and the analysis of resulting data for material characterization. The salary will depend on the candidate's experience: candidates without a Ph.D. may have the opportunity to join the Ph.D. program at the University of Verona.

Project: Scan4Reco

Scan4Reco focuses on “Multimodal Scanning of Cultural Heritage Assets for their multilayered digitization and preventive conservation via spatiotemporal 4D Reconstruction and 3D Printing”. It involves 9 research and industrial partners from 5 countries. The tasks involving the UNIVR unit will mainly include developing acquisition and processing methods, modeling the effects of aging and time on different materials, and creating test applications with the end user partner, Opificio Delle Pietre Dure, Italy's leading organization in conservation and restoration of artworks.

Workplace:

The research activities will be carried out at the Vision, Image Processing, and Sound (VIPS) Laboratory and the Optical Devices and Advanced Techniques (OpDATe) Laboratory, both hosted by the Department of Computer Science at the University of Verona.

The Department is actively involved in advanced research, with a €3 million annual R&D budget, participating in 16 European-funded projects (totaling €5.2 million during 2007-2013) and 26 international and national projects (totaling €7.7 million). It has produced about 2000 scientific publications, along with 5 spin-offs, 10 patents, and 253 industry grants (€4.8 million).
