Overview

EMBL is Europe’s flagship life sciences laboratory, an intergovernmental organisation with more than 110 independent research groups and service teams. It operates across six sites in Heidelberg (headquarters), Barcelona, Cambridge, Grenoble, Hamburg and Rome. Its mission is to perform basic research in molecular biology; train scientists, students and visitors at all levels; offer vital services to scientists in the public and private sectors within the member states; develop new instruments and methods; and engage actively in technology transfer.

EMBL shares the Monterotondo Campus with the Italian National Research Council (CNR) Institute for Biochemistry and Cell Biology (IBBC). The CNR-managed refurbishment of the main EMBL building on the Monterotondo campus is nearing completion. This role sits within EMBL Facility Management to support the refurbished building of the EMBL Epigenetics and Neurobiology Unit in Monterotondo (near Rome, Italy).

The Junior Building Maintenance Officer will join a small on-site team and work to ensure continuity of the Laboratory’s scientific activities during this development period. The successful candidate will support planning and maintenance activities and will be provided with learning and experience opportunities to build a platform for their future career.

Responsibilities
  • Implement a maintenance plan for new and existing facilities; liaise with external maintenance providers to maximise system availability.
  • Develop and update a Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for preventative maintenance of electrical and mechanical infrastructure; leverage in-house expertise and technological developments.
  • Coordinate ordinary maintenance activities across electrical, mechanical, fire prevention, hydraulic and special systems in accordance with pre-established time slots; create and release work/service orders as needed.
  • Monitor and manage extraordinary maintenance through analysis of requests, documentation, feasibility studies, and organization of corrective interventions.
  • Maintain an updated overview of the availability of critical spare parts.
  • Participate in daily planning meetings and update workshop whiteboards with scheduled maintenance slots.
What you have
  • Awareness of plant maintenance practices (electrical, fire prevention, hydraulic, mechanical and technical gas systems).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and maintenance manuals.
  • Working knowledge of English and excellent command of Italian (native speaker is advantageous).
  • Familiarity with Building Management Systems; knowledge of security/safety systems and other technical equipment.
  • Degree in Engineering, Facilities Management or related field, or Technical High School diploma with 1–2 years of relevant experience.
  • Good knowledge of the Office package, particularly Excel; proficiency in AutoCAD.

  • Ability to work in a team, be service-oriented and receptive to feedback.
  • Problem solving: ability to identify quick and effective solutions in complex situations.
  • Teamwork orientation and good communication skills.
Nice to have
  • Familiarity with Italian safety procedures and regulations.
  • Knowledge of operating biological laboratories or equivalent.
Contract and Benefits
  • Contract length: 3 years renewable up to 9 years.
  • Salary: Grade 4 (monthly salary starting from 2,800 EUR after tax), other paid benefits; negotiable according to experience.
