This fully funded 4-year PhD project at Swansea University focuses on the computational verification of high-speed multi-material flows, an area of interest to the Defence Sector, with limited physical experimentation. The project builds upon recent advances in bridging Computational Solid and Fluid Dynamics through a unified computational framework that employs physical and geometrical conservation laws across various spatial discretisation schemes (Finite Element, Finite Volume, Meshless). The research aims to explore multi-material capabilities, interface tracking/capturing strategies, and high-speed nonlinear scenarios, with potential for 3D development in Year 4.
The successful candidate will join an active research group working on large strain solid dynamics, dynamic fracture/contact, and multi-physics computational techniques.
IELTS 6.5 overall (minimum 5.5 in each component) or Swansea recognised equivalent.
The scholarship covers full tuition fees, an annual stipend at the UKRI rate (£20,780 for 2025/26), and up to £1,000 per year for research expenses.
Eligibility: UK fee eligible applicants only, as per UKCISA regulations.
