The appointee will join the well‑established Department of Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine and Integrated Pain Services as a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine as part of a service development plan for a new 22‑bedded Intensive Care Unit under the new Acute Surgical Block (ASB) set to complete in autumn 2025.

Applicants must be included in the GMC Specialist Register for Intensive Care Medicine or be within six months of CCT accreditation. The successful candidate will provide a comprehensive high‑quality service to the department as a consultant intensivist.

The Clinical Lead for Intensive Care Medicine at Luton and Dunstable Hospital is Dr Raza. The post involves regular daytime ICM commitment and out‑of‑hours on‑call ICM consultant commitment.

Luton and Dunstable Hospital is located within easy access to central London and the Midlands. London Luton Airport is within fifteen minutes' drive.

• Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients requiring Intensive Care.
• To undertake duties as part of the on‑call out‑of‑hours consultant rota.
• To work constructively and flexibly with colleagues in the Department of Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine and Integrated Pain Management to provide the best care for patients.
• Teaching and training of intermediate grade and junior medical staff, nursing staff and medical students.
• To actively participate in department‑ and Trust‑level clinical governance and audit.
• To have responsibility for and actively participate in Continuing Professional Development (CPD), with time and financial support from the Trust.

The role is within the scope of current legislation and COVID‑19 vaccination status will remain part of routine Occupational Health checks.

Applicants will be subject to full Occupational Health clearance, Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service checks and must hold full UK Medical/Dental registration at the time of application.

• Medical degree (MB ChB or equivalent)
• FFICM or equivalent
• Other relevant qualifications eg DICM, EDIC, FRCA, MRCP, FRCP

• Full GMC registration (Licence to Practice mandatory before employment)
• CCT in ICM (or within 6 months of completion)
• CESR in ICM (must be on the specialist register at application)
• Evidence of subspecialty training or fellowship out of region

• Knowledge and experience of Safeguarding for Children and Adults
• Current ALS provider status (or European equivalent)
• Participation in relevant national audits
• Implementation of evidence‑based guidelines

• Knowledge and ability to teach all grades of trainees and medical students
• Attendance of “Teaching the Teachers” or similar course
• GMC registered educational supervisor
• Ability to work under pressure and cope with setbacks
• Ability to develop effective working relationships with all levels of staff in the multidisciplinary team
• Leadership skills
• Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national level

• Able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the principles and elements of clinical governance

• Residence within 10 miles of the hospital for on‑call emergencies
• Fit to undertake the role with satisfactory Occupational Health clearance
• Satisfactory DBS clearance

• Training and experience equivalent to UK CCT in Intensive Care Medicine
• Record of regular attendance at national specialty meetings or up‑to‑date CPD activity related to ICM
• Able to take full and independent responsibility for the care of critically ill patients
• Use of ultrasound in critical care
• Accreditation in point‑of‑care ultrasound course (eg FICE or POCUS)
