Job summary

A UK recruitment agency is seeking a full-time Welfare Support Assistant to join a welcoming secondary school in Gosport, Hampshire. This role focuses on providing essential pastoral and emotional support to students with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs. The successful candidate will help create a supportive environment, build trusting relationships, and work collaboratively with the educational team. The position is term-time only, starting January 2026, with hours from 8:30am to 3:30pm, Monday to Friday.

GSL Education are seeking a dedicated and empathetic Welfare Support Assistant to join a welcoming secondary school in Gosport. This full-time, term-time only role offers a fantastic opportunity to provide vital pastoral and emotional support to students, helping them thrive both inside and outside the classroom. You’ll be part of a committed team focused on supporting students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

Key Responsibilities of Welfare Support Assistant
  • Provide emotional and pastoral support to students throughout the school day.
  • Respond to welfare concerns promptly and effectively.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with students to encourage engagement and wellbeing.
  • Work collaboratively with teaching and pastoral teams to create a supportive environment.
What We’re Looking For
  • Experience working with young people in a welfare, pastoral, or support role.
  • Transferable skills from youth work, social work, or similar backgrounds.
  • A genuine passion for supporting students’ emotional and mental wellbeing.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
