Job description
About Zelp

ZELP is an agricultural technology company committed to creating a sustainable future for agriculture - one that meets the needs of present and future generations, promoting human and environmental health, animal welfare, and social and economic equity.

Our first focus is to develop and scale technology that measures and mitigates methane emissions in the livestock industry. Today, 1.3 billion people rely on the industry for their livelihoods and food security. However, it is the single biggest human-driven source of methane emissions globally, emitting more than both the oil & gas industry and the coal industry.

The deployment of our technologies on a global scale has the potential to drive half the global methane reduction needed by 2030, and to transform the beef and dairy industries.

ZELP was an inaugural winner of the Terra Carta Design Lab, and has received funding and support from the European Commission, Innovate UK, The Global Methane Hub and the Gates Foundation.

Role Summary

We are looking for a passionate Veterinary Surgeon who is looking to do something a bit different! The ideal candidate must have had extensive bovine experience.

You will split your time between our bustling London head office and one of our research farms, the main one being in Reading. You will be part of a ground breaking research team studying bovine respiratory mechanics, behaviour and welfare.

You will be working hand-in-hand with our R&D team to develop and refine state-of-the-art wearable devices that measure and mitigate methane emissions, delivering invaluable data to farmers and researchers, helping to contribute to sustainable farming practices and a greener future.

While this role is primarily based at our base in Holloway Road in London, there is often the need to travel out of the UK with this role, and we aim to give you as much notice as possible.

Main Responsibilities
  • Analysing Wearable Data: Unlock valuable insights into animal health, welfare, and environmental impact using cutting-edge wearable technology.
  • Designing & Conducting Clinical Trials: Lead pioneering trials to test the efficacy and safety of our wearable devices, ensuring top-tier compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Farm Activities: Immerse yourself in on-farm activities, channelling your enthusiasm for setting up innovative trials and closely monitoring animal health and behaviour.
  • Experimental Design: Spearhead experimental designs for crucial trials in data collection, welfare enhancement, and methane mitigation.
  • Liaising with Partners: Collaborate with esteemed academic and corporate partners, representing ZELP at the forefront of veterinary science.
  • Supporting Engineering Teams: Provide expert animal science support to our in-house engineering teams, bridging the gap between technology and animal welfare.
  • Travel & Field Support: Venture out to farms as needed, supporting product development and implementation in real-world settings.
Experience required
  • Expertise in Animal Welfare: Experience in monitoring and enhancing animal welfare, with a deep understanding of bovine respiratory systems, behaviour, and overall well-being of the animal.

  • Clinical Research & Data Analysis: Strong background in practical clinical research, data analysis, and interpretation.
  • Tech-Savvy: Familiarity with the development and application of wearable technology or similar technological innovations in veterinary science.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Understanding of regulatory standards related to animal health and environmental monitoring, particularly within the UK.
  • Team work: Ability to work in a fast paced environment, with excellent collaboration skills within the team.
Nice to have but not essential
  • Experience with wearable technology or environmental monitoring is a plus.
  • Experience with ethical review applications and processes is a plus.
Professional Qualifications
