Job description
OOH/Emergency Veterinary Surgeon – Hampshire

For more than 130 years, this highly regarded independent practice in Hampshire has been at the heart of its local community, delivering outstanding veterinary care with warmth, integrity and a truly personal approach. Purpose‑built, fully ventilated and air‑conditioned, the modern facilities provide an exceptional environment for patient care.

  • Opportunity to help build and shape a brand-new 24‑hour emergency service from the ground up
  • Excellent clinical facilities, including CT, digital X‑ray, ultrasound, laparoscopy and video endoscopy
  • Flexible rota options with genuine input into shift patterns and work‑life balance
  • Strong on‑site support, including a Registered Veterinary Nurse and structured handovers
  • Competitive salary package with funded CPD and enhanced staff benefits

The practice is deeply committed to clinical excellence and continual investment. It is equipped with an impressive range of advanced diagnostic and surgical tools, including dental X‑ray, video endoscopy, laparoscopy, CT and multiple multi‑parameter monitors. This level of investment enables a wide variety of cases to be managed confidently in‑house, empowering the team to deliver consistently exceptional clinical outcomes.

A strong, supportive team culture sits at the heart of the practice. With exceptionally low staff turnover and a genuine ethos of openness and collaboration, team members are encouraged to contribute ideas, feel valued, and grow professionally. The practice is proud to be both a VNTC and Surrey Vet School IMR provider, with a highly experienced senior team of veterinary surgeons and nurses dedicated to mentoring and developing future generations of professionals.

An exciting new chapter is now underway with the launch of a comprehensive, in‑house 24‑hour service. This ambitious expansion reflects the practice’s commitment to continuity of care, compassion and fair, transparent pricing, ensuring patients receive the care they deserve, exactly when they need it.

The appointed Veterinary Surgeon will be an integral part of the emergency team, managing a varied caseload of emergency presentations and hospitalised patients overnight. You will benefit from access to first‑class facilities and equipment, including digital X‑ray, video endoscopy, laparoscopy, multi‑parameter monitoring and high‑specification ultrasound. A Registered Veterinary Nurse is on site at all times, with structured handover each morning to ensure excellent continuity of patient care.

The role offers a high degree of clinical autonomy, supported by a collaborative team that values open communication and mutual respect. Prior out‑of‑hours experience is welcomed, although the post would also suit an experienced daytime veterinary surgeon seeking to transition into emergency and critical care. The ideal candidate will be calm, confident and decisive, with the ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, high‑standards environment.

Flexible shift patterns are available, and as this is a brand‑new service, there is a genuine opportunity for the successful candidate to influence and help design the rota structure to support both team wellbeing and service delivery. A comfortable on‑site bedsit is provided, offering facilities for rest, study and relaxation during quieter periods.

Benefits
  • Salary: £60,000 – £75,000 depending on experience
  • Flexible rota options (e.g. 7 nights on / 14 nights off, open to discussion)
  • Active involvement in developing and shaping a new 24‑hour service
  • Generous staff discount (75% fee discount, medications at cost)
  • Funded and actively encouraged CPD, including support towards certificates
  • Company pension scheme
  • RCVS and VDS fees fully covered
  • Cycle to Work scheme
