Trainee Education Mental Health Practitioner

We're excited to offer Trainee EMHP positions across Bradford and Craven - a fantastic opportunity to train and work within a rapidly growing team dedicated to supporting young people's mental health in educational settings.

Following the ambitions outlined in the Government's Green Paper to enhance mental health support in schools, Bradford has developed a strong EMHP team and is now expanding further.

This is a 12‑month fixed term training post, during which you'll study at university two days per week and work in service three days per week. During this time, you'll be paid at NHS AfC: Band 4.

Candidates will need to be ready to start university week commencing 16th February 2026

Upon successful completion of the EMHP Postgraduate Diploma and having obtained registration with the relevant governing body, your role will become permanent and progress to NHS AfC: Band 5.

Main duties of the job

Job Purpose:

Under supervision and with support, to develop knowledge and practice skills in:

  • Delivering evidence‑based interventions for children and young people, with mild to moderate mental health problems, in education settings.
  • Helping children and young people within these settings who present with more severe problems to rapidly access more specialist services.
  • Supporting and facilitating staff in education settings to identify, and where appropriate, manage issues related to mental health and wellbeing.
  • Working with and within educational environments to afford better access to specialist mental health services.
  • To evidence development of those skills with associated knowledge acquisition to record and evidence progression towards an academic award and demonstrable practical ability.

Qualifications
  • Diploma or equivalent appropriate qualification, e.g. foundation degree, NVQ3 level qualification plus short courses or relevant experience to diploma level – demonstrating ability to study at Level 7
Experience
  • The postholder will be studying for a postgraduate diploma; evidence of ability to study at level 7 is required.
  • Evidence of working with children and young people who experience common mental health difficulties including anxiety and/or depression.
  • Demonstrates high standards in written communication.
  • Working knowledge of Health, Social and caring services, education and voluntary sector, together with the relevant legislation regarding both children and mental health.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills to safeguard and protect children and young people's welfare in line with the Children's Act 2004 requirements.
  • Able to write clear reports and letters.
  • Ability to manage own caseload and time.
  • Working within a school setting.
  • Working within a mental health setting.
  • Working with children.
  • Working within an organisation with agreed standards and targets in place to demonstrate outcomes.
  • Evidence of working within the local community.
