Tobacco Dependence Treatment Advisor (permanent)

An exciting opportunity has arisen to be a part of the Guy's and St Thomas' Acute Tobacco Dependence Treatment Team. We are looking for two Tobacco Dependence Advisors who will enjoy working as part of a small team delivering tobacco dependence treatment to patients across our two hospital sites. The post holders will be involved in supporting the continuing development and delivery of our services to meet the Long Term Plan for tobacco, including assessing and delivering ward based interventions and supporting the development and delivery of MDT training. This position will help us to achieve the Trust commitment to drive a culture change towards prevention and to bring the promotion of optimised physical health and wellbeing into the mainstream.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to support the delivery of the tobacco dependence treatment initiatives of the Trust aimed at promoting and improving the health of patients including the LTP project, MECC and Vital 5 programmes.

Duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Provide appropriate clinical interventions to inpatients to support time-limited withdrawal management and long-term smoking cessation
  • To collaborate with the TDT specialists to monitor ward compliance with the LTP project
  • To contribute to the training package offered to staff in the target clinical areas in very brief advice (VBA)
  • To be engaged and proactive with the further development and roll out of the tobacco dependence treatment programmes developed by the Trust throughout the hospital.

Job responsibilities
  • To assist the clinical team in assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of inpatient tobacco dependence treatment, devise a treatment plan and ensuring tobacco dependence care is given throughout the inpatient stay and post-discharge follow-up
  • To uphold and actively support the Trusts smoke-free status
  • With support from a specialist, to manage a caseload of clients and prioritise service user needs
  • Develop expertise in effective treatment programmes for people with a range of smoking related health conditions
  • To utilise a range of different approaches to raise awareness of tobacco dependence services and to use all possible opportunities to generate referrals
  • To promote and facilitate the development of seamless care pathways and referral systems between professionals in acute settings, midwifery, community health services and primary care.
  • To support the integration of the tobacco dependence service into broader health development initiatives
  • To contribute to the ongoing development, delivery, monitoring and evaluation of the tobacco dependence treatment service

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Educated to degree level
  • Stop Smoking Practitioner Training (accredited by the National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training) Level2 training
Skills / Knowledge / Ability
  • Ability to manage own workload and prioritise work
  • Effective interpersonal, motivational and influencing skills
  • Computer literate, including Microsoft applications, and ability to use databases
  • Understanding of strategies to improve health and wellbeing and address health inequalities.
  • Adaptable to different working situations and interacting with people of all backgrounds
  • Able to assess patients. Triage, referring those who present with more complex needs
  • Awareness of latest guidance to support the delivery of effective tobacco dependence programmes.
  • Skills in using acute systems eg) EPIC, EPR, Medchart
Previous Experience
  • Patient-facing work experience in a relevant discipline (e.g. public health, health promotion).
  • Demonstrate experience of working within a clinical role and delivering 1-1 interventions.
  • Experience of working with multidisciplinary teams in an acute setting
  • Experience of delivering tobacco dependence treatment programmes
