Job description

St Marys University is recruiting three, one-year fixed-term OOPE lecturers in Primary Care Medical Education. This is a unique opportunity to gain broad experience across multiple aspects of undergraduate medical education. Postholders will play an active role in shaping a new and innovative MBBS programme, contributing to curriculum development, teaching resource creation, and student support.

The key responsibilities of the OOPE/Lecturers in Medical Education will be the delivery of clinical teaching throughout the MBBS programme in accordance with the GMC regulations, University requirements, and the School's contingent partner ULAN. Facilitation work will include a wide range of teaching and learning activities, such as clinical and communication skills, integrated small group teaching, interprofessional education, clinical problem sessions, narrative-based medicine sessions, and professionalism workshops. The postholder will take an active part in assessment, clinical and communication skills and will be involved in primary care assessment processes.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Undertake clinical teaching as a member of the teaching team across the St Marys University (SMU) MBBS programme, with specific responsibility for teaching across all three modules. Teach in a variety of settings from small group tutorials to large lectures.
  • Design and develop integrated small group learning which integrate the patient as a whole, including science, social population perspectives, ethical and legal elements, including student resources and facilitator guides.
  • Plan, prepare and deliver small group teaching to ensure inclusivity remains a core feature of the curriculum and teaching.
  • Assist in the preparation and production of resources and Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) materials.
  • Participate informal and informal assessment activities including SBA and OSCE.
  • All trainees must be able to demonstrate satisfactory progression through their training to date. They must have a current satisfactory ARCP on application. Prior to commencement of the post, they must have a satisfactory ARCP at the end of the ST2 year confirming the end of year sign off. Trainees who are completing their training and gaining CCT by August2026 are not eligible to apply.

At both undergraduate and postgraduate level, we are committed to offering vocationally relevant programmes of study with the highest academic standards. The SoM is aligning its MBBS curriculum to its Contingent partner (University of Lancashire -ULAN) which is developed on a spiral curriculum, of integrated science, clinical knowledge and skills and professional practice throughout the 5 years of the programme. The MBBS programme is arranged across three modules: Integrated and Applied Science and Clinical Medicine, Medicine & Society and Clinical and Professional Practice. In Phase I of the MBBS (Years 1 and 2) applied science is integrated with understanding Medicine and Society, and Professionalism in all aspects of work, including clinical learning and placements in community and primary care; while Phase 2 (Years 3-5) incorporates placements in all settings (primary, community and secondary care), as students deepen and apply their knowledge.

The St Mary's University School of Medicine (SoM), opening in 2026, aims to become an internationally recognised School of Medicine focussed on values- led medical education, where students will graduate with a deep sense of social purpose and a commitment to addressing inequalities.
