Therapy Assistant

We are looking for an individual who is driven, motivated and confident in communicating with others to join the Therapy team on Brant Ward, our 18-bed acute assessment ward for older adults experiencing complex mental health problems.

The role of Therapy Assistant will provide effective evidence-based therapeutic interventions for older people referred to inpatient services under the direction of qualified Allied Health Professionals.

Therapy Assistants will work in close collaboration with AHPs and the wider multidisciplinary team, delivering therapy care plans that maintain and improve skills in activities of daily living, support communication and promote independence and choice at all times. Therapy Assistants will assist in organising and delivering individual and group clinical programmes as agreed with supervising AHPs in line with clinical governance and professional standards.

Main duties of the job

Responsibility of the post holder:

• Manage a personal caseload under the supervision of a qualified clinician.
• To deliver evidence-based interventions in both individual and group-based scenarios.
• Contribute to the development of evidence-based practice within the service.
• To be responsible for maintaining a stock of therapy equipment/materials if appropriate and its safe administration in the treatment of service users in your care.
• Support other staff in facilitating and the delivery of activity programs.
• To input accurate written and/or electronic clinical records in line with the Data Protection Act, Mental Health Act, other legislation, professional standards, local service standards and Trust standards.
• Document confidential details of patients' activity and provide information which will contribute to the formulation of care plans/reports.
• Work closely with individuals, carers, families, Therapy team and the wider MDT to achieve the best outcomes for individuals in their care.
• Work closely with qualified AHPs such as Occupational Therapy & Physiotherapy to deliver evidence-based interventions.

Job responsibilities

• Deliver therapeutic activity programmes to meet defined clinical outcomes
• Assessing and providing interventions to patients under the supervision of a qualified Allied Health Professional i.e., Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist
• To be involved in interventions to relatives, carers and other professionals, to promote understanding of the aims of therapy and to ensure a consistent approach to patient care.
• To contribute to the assessment of a patients understanding of treatment proposals, and work within the legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent.
• Be prepared to work alone within scope of role and have their own caseload of patients with non-complex needs previously seen by a registered AHP.
• To support other staff and students as appropriate.
• To respond positively to organisational change and be flexible with work practices depending on need.
• Support the provision of a flexible 7-day-a-week service if service requires this working both inpatient and in community settings.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• RQF Level 3 qualifications i.e. 3 A Levels OR Health and Science T-Level OR commitment to achieve a relevant level 3 qualification.
• GCSE 4-9 OR Functional Skills 2
• Or: Level 3 Apprenticeship Senior Healthcare Support Worker, or other level 3 qualification pathway.
• Evidence of training applicable to health/social care
• Basic Food Hygiene Certificate

Experience

• Relevant experience working with people with mental health problems or demonstration of an understanding of people with mental health problems.
• Experience of working in a healthcare environment
• Experience of working in a therapeutic setting

Skills

• Ability to show an awareness and understanding of individual service users needs and choices in relation to activity participation
• Ability to work effectively as a team member, being adaptable to changing demands within the service
• Good planning and organising skills, ability to manage day to day tasks, being flexible to meet competing demands.
• Able to work independently and use own initiative in relation to facilitating relevant social / recreational activities.
