Availability Window

Availability windows are as follows: Sun–Sat 22:00 to 07:00. The times you are available to work will be scheduled as contracted hours, with 3 weeks’ notice of your shifts. We are happy to support flexibility if your available times closely match but not exactly the advertised times.

Pay and Hours

Our Shift Leader rate of pay starts from £14.76 per hour; this increases to £15.97 per hour for stores inside the M25. For all hours worked between midnight and 6am you will receive an additional night premium of £2.35 per hour. Additional payments may apply depending on location. It is our policy to offer new colleagues a minimum of 16 guaranteed hours each week, but opportunities to work fewer hours (to a minimum of 12) are available as well.

Role Overview and Responsibilities

Tesco Shift Leaders support store operations and customer service to help the store run smoothly. Responsibilities include:

  • Work in a fast-paced retail environment with variety
  • Take ownership of running duty shifts, coordinating the team to deliver a clean, well-stocked store that exceeds customer expectations
  • Be available to assist customers and ensure they leave with what they came for
  • Look for ways to improve service, coach colleagues, and provide feedback to the team
  • Guide and support colleagues in-store, maintaining a safe place to work and shop
  • Maintain understanding of store performance and assist managers in implementing actions to improve operations
  • Lead from the front and set a positive example for colleagues
Additional Duties and Expectations
  • Coordinate the store team to deliver an easy, efficient shopping experience
  • Support colleagues in delivering daily priorities and managing breaks
  • Open and close the store and ensure duty cover is appropriate for safety
  • Be the point of contact for colleagues in the absence of a manager for day-to-day queries
  • Ensure the store is clean, tidy, and well-presented
  • Support managers to coordinate seasonal, community and charity events
  • Contribute to a positive, inclusive team atmosphere and provide great customer service
  • Keep the team informed about communications, changes, or updates
  • Stay knowledgeable about store performance and seek ways to simplify operations
  • Coordinate store improvements and remove obstacles to service
  • Follow health and safety routines and ensure colleagues do the same
  • Recognise and celebrate colleagues delivering great service
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Be 18 years or over to apply
  • Be able to work the specified availability and flexible hours
  • Be comfortable taking the lead and overseeing the store in the absence of a Manager
  • Be a good decision maker, flexible in thinking, and able to adapt to change to serve customers and colleagues
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills and motivate the team to meet and exceed expectations
