About the role

Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Temporary Works Design Engineer to join our Regional team, working across our UKCS Regional Civils (East, North West, Central South East, and South) projects. The role is based out of our Leeds or Warrington office.

This position involves working on multiple projects at various locations, providing diverse project exposure. We aim to strengthen our technical hub within the Balfour Beatty UKCS Regional Civils Temporary Works department. We seek a technically proficient, ambitious, energetic engineer eager to develop their skills and contribute to building strong technical capabilities.

What you'll be doing

As a Temporary Works Design Engineer, your responsibilities include:

1. Undertaking temporary works design and checks for projects, independently or under supervision, covering:

• Site establishment
• Haul roads
• Working platforms
• Service protection slabs
• Shoring solutions
• Earthworks excavation and slope stability
• Formwork/ falsework
• Temporary bridges
• Scaffolding and edge protection
• Rebar cage stability
• Propping

You will also:

• Ensure designs comply with briefs and are delivered on time.
• Assess design risks and prepare risk assessments.
• Complete technical approval documents, including Approval in Principles (AIP) for National Highways and Form C for Network Rail.
• Support site and office teams to ensure compliance with procedures.
• Assist work-winning teams with design buildability and develop safe, innovative, cost-effective solutions.
• Uphold Balfour Beatty values: Integrity, Teamwork, Excellence, Respect.
• Prioritize Zero Harm in all activities.

Who we're looking for

Candidates should have:

• A degree, HNC, or equivalent in civil or structural engineering.
• Postgraduate experience in design or site activities.
• Knowledge of temporary works equipment and site activities.
• Familiarity with relevant standards and codes, including BS5975:2019.
• Good relationships with colleagues and external consultants.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Experience with AutoCAD and other design software (e.g., Hilti Profis, Tensar, GFSafe, WALLAP, ROBOT, Geo 5).
• Working towards professional membership (ICE or IStructE).
