Role: Technician - Plumbing

Location: Bedford College - Kempston Gas & Plumbing Technology Centre

Salary/Benefits: Salary is between £23,557 and £25,849 per annum DOE and Qualifications, 27 days annual leave plus Bank holidays, People’s pension, Retail and Leisure Discounts, excellent professional and personal development opportunities, accessing college courses.

Hours/Weeks: 37 hours per week - 52 weeks per year

Contract Type: Permanent - Full Time

About the role

We are currently seeking a Technician in Plumbing to join our Construction department at The Bedford College Group.

As a Technician, you play an important role in the success of our students through:

  • Workshop Support & Maintenance - Assist lecturers and trainers in Plumbing and wider Construction areas, maintaining tools, equipment, and facilities to ensure safety, serviceability, and readiness for learning.
  • Stock & Equipment Management - Develop systems for secure storage, inventory control, and issuing of tools and materials; monitor budgets and place orders in line with college financial procedures.
  • Health & Safety Compliance - Ensure workshops meet safety regulations, conduct risk and COSHH assessments, and maintain a clean, hazard-free environment in collaboration with the Health & Safety Manager.
  • Student & Staff Support - Provide guidance to students, support discipline procedures, manufacture teaching aids, and contribute to a positive and inclusive learning environment.
  • College-Wide Engagement - Participate in marketing events, safeguarding, and training activities; uphold equality, diversity, and health & safety standards in line with TBCG policies and values.
Qualifications & requirements
  • Qualifications & Industry Knowledge - Holds a Level 2 NVQ/Diploma in a construction trade, with plumbing experience and understanding of safe working practices and wider construction industry standards.
  • Technical & Practical Skills - Skilled in maintaining stock inventories, preparing and repairing tools and equipment, and ensuring workshop readiness and safety.
  • Professional Attributes - Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work independently with minimal supervision; consistently supports a high-quality learning environment.
  • Communication & Teamwork - Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively, respect team contributions, and represent the college professionally.
  • Commitment & Flexibility - Promotes safeguarding, equality, and health & safety; willing to travel across sites, adapt working hours, and engage in ongoing professional development.
