Job summary

A leading fire safety firm in Liverpool is seeking a skilled fire engineer for a pivotal role in technical design and compliance of fire detection and alarm systems. You will conduct site surveys, produce technical documentation, and act as a trusted technical authority while mentoring junior engineers. The Opportunity

Within this position you'll play a key role in the technical design, survey, and specification of fire detection and alarm systems, ensuring compliance with BS 5839-1 and delivering safe, reliable, and high-performing solutions.

You’ll act as a trusted technical authority, supporting clients and project teams from concept to completion, while mentoring junior engineers and promoting technical excellence.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct detailed site surveys and design fully compliant fire detection and alarm systems.
  • Produce accurate technical documentation, drawings, schematics, and cause & effect matrices.
  • Integrate systems with door entry, access control, PAVA, and BMS systems.
  • Lead client meetings, design reviews, and provide expert advice.
  • Review designs for compliance and support installation and commissioning teams.
  • Contribute to training and the continuous improvement of design standards.
Essential Requirements
  • Formal qualification in BS 5839-1 Fire Detection & Alarm System Design (FIA or equivalent).
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in the fire detection and alarm industry (surveying, design, or commissioning).
  • Strong working knowledge of BS 5839-1:2017 and 2023 amendments.
  • Proven experience integrating fire systems with door entry, access control, and security systems.
  • Ability to read and produce technical drawings and design documentation.
  • Confident liaising with clients and leading technical discussions.
  • Valid UK driving licence and willingness to travel.
  • ECS / CSCS Card, SMSTS, or other site safety qualifications.
Desirable Requirements
  • FIA Advanced Design, Maintenance, or Commissioning certification.
  • Experience as a Senior Engineer, Project Manager, or Operations Lead.
  • Health & Safety qualifications.
  • First Aid certification.
