About Old Swinford Hospital

Old Swinford Hospital is one of the country’s leading state boarding schools, with a history of nearly 360 years. The school welcomes boarders and day pupils from a wide range of backgrounds in the UK, EU and overseas. The school is now fully co‑education and is calm, inclusive, tolerant and welcoming. The atmosphere is supportive and orderly, and the school is a relaxed home for many pupils, with parents, pupils and staff all on the same side, encouraging pupils to learn before going out into the wider world and making their own contribution to it.

About the Mathematics Department

The mathematics department, from September 2026, will comprise nine teachers. The department is one of the best performing in the school, with 20% of all students achieving a grade 9 and 50% of all students achieving a grade 7 or above at GCSE Mathematics last year. The team is experienced in teaching and all count maths as a hobby as well as a profession. At GCSE the AQA specification is followed, whilst at A Level the department works with Edexcel for all courses. The department operates from its own floor in the newest building, Swinford Court.

General Job Specification and Conditions of Employment
  • Plan, design and produce teaching materials and resources appropriate to the age and ability of students, in accordance with the School Development Plan and the Department Development Plan;
  • Plan, deliver and review lessons in accordance with the scheme of work, facilitating student progression and following the required examination syllabuses;
  • Assess, record and report on student development, progress and attainment, within the School guidelines;
  • Manage the classroom and teaching equipment to create a supportive and positive learning environment;
  • Attend meetings and carry out administrative tasks and duties as specified in the Staff Handbook;
  • Provide guidance and advice to pupils on educational and social matters, facilitating their general progress and well‑being;
  • Implement the School policy related to registration, student absence, dress code and enforce School rules relating to behaviour and health and safety;
  • Participate in full staff and departmental meetings and contribute to School decision‑making and consultation procedures;
  • Engage in professional development activities to enhance personal performance, fulfil personal potential and participate effectively in the implementation of the School’s goals and Development Plan;
  • Establish individual active links with industry and business to extend student learning and own professional development;
  • Act as an Academic Tutor to an assigned Tutor Group if required, carrying out related duties in accordance with the general job description of Tutor, including meeting parents and contacting home when directed;
  • Carry out a share of supervisory duties in accordance with published rotas, including break duty and lunch duty in return for complementary school dinners;
  • Participate in appropriate meetings with colleagues and parents;
  • Operate relevant equipment/ICT packages (e.g. MS Office, Internet, intranet, EduLink, SIMS, Every, E‑mail);
  • Keep up‑to‑date knowledge of external agencies and opportunities that can provide extra support for students;
  • Support Learning Support Assistants with day‑to‑day issues;
  • Participate in the promotion of the Department and School, including Saturday morning Open Days and other Open Evenings, Induction Days and the like, and the attendance at any marketing events as requested by SLT;
  • Ensure effective communication with all colleagues (teaching and support staff);
  • Undertake any training required;
  • Undertake such other duties as the Headmaster or member of SLT may require from time to time reasonably.
