Job description
Systemic Anti‑Cancer Therapy (SACT) Scheduler

The closing date is 11 December 2025.

We are looking for a band 4 SACT Scheduler to join our SACT scheduling team on an 8‑month fixed‑term secondment to cover maternity leave.

The role is office‑based, dealing with telephone queries from patients undergoing cancer treatment, scheduling appointments for systemic anti‑cancer therapies (SACT), and working as part of the MDT in the patient pathway. This is a fast‑paced role requiring strict attention to detail and the ability to multitask.

The ideal candidate should have excellent computing and communication skills, be able to liaise with patients, and have an understanding of cancer waiting times or experience in a cancer‑related role.

Hours: 37.5 hours per week (core 08:00‑18:00 Monday‑Friday). Shift pattern: 3 days 08:00‑18:00 and 1 day 08:00‑17:30 per week or 08:00‑16:00 Monday‑Friday.

Main duties of the job
  • Receiving referrals for cancer treatment
  • Booking patients in for pre‑assessment clinics
  • Booking patients in for SACT treatments
  • Managing deferrals of patient appointments
  • Managing a busy email inbox and responding to queries in a timely manner
  • Answering telephone queries and communicating with patients/relatives
  • Liaising with nursing and medical staff
  • Involvement in bed allocation of emergency or elective patients if required (primary role is scheduling)

Job responsibilities
  • Receive SACT referrals and schedule patients for elective inpatient or day‑case treatments and procedures
  • Coordinate elective inpatient admissions for the Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC) and Specialist Haematology (SH)
  • Act as the main contact with patients, health‑care professionals and other organisations to ensure an efficient service
  • Liaise with patients, healthcare professionals and agencies regarding appointments for chemotherapy
  • Contribute to a consistently high standard of patient care as part of the MDT
  • Participate in directorate meetings to support admissions and bed allocation of emergency admissions
  • Provide day‑to‑day supervision for ward staff on Ward 36, NCCC
  • Provide local training, induction and yearly appraisals for staff
Qualifications & Education
  • NVQ level III or equivalent knowledge and experience
  • GCSE English at level 4‑9 (A‑C)
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
Knowledge & Experience
  • Previous experience as an NHS clerical officer
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of patient administrative systems (e.g., eRecord, NEAS Online Booking System)
  • Customer service experience
  • Experience producing reports in a presentable format
  • Experience with SACT regimes
  • Knowledge of the NHS cancer plan and cancer waiting‑time target
  • Knowledge and awareness of issues affecting NHS acute hospitals
  • Supervision of junior staff and participation in staff appraisals
