Overview
We are seeking a senior electrical engineer with strong leadership capabilities to oversee multiple substation physical design projects. This individual will serve as the technical lead, guiding a team of 5–6 supporting engineers and ensuring project delivery excellence.
While the role is project-driven and client-facing, it does not include formal personnel management. Candidates should have a proven track record in substation design, with the ability to handle anywhere from one to five projects at a time.
Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate multiple substation physical design projects, ensuring on-time, high-quality deliverables.
- Serve as technical lead and primary point of contact for clients and cross-discipline teams.
- Guide a team of 5–6 supporting engineers, providing oversight and reviews to maintain deliverable quality.
- Collaborate with structural and civil engineering groups to ensure integrated design.
- Develop and review physical layouts, electrical assemblies, and related documentation for substations.
- Support project planning, risk assessment, and scope changes as needed.
Work Location and Travel
- Hybrid Remote: Marlborough MA onsite 2–3 days per week and remainder remotely.
- Travel: Approximately 10% local travel across MA, CT, and RI markets.

Required Background
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or closely related field).
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience in substation physical design.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with clients and cross-discipline teams.
- Demonstrated experience in reviewing and performing quality checks on substation design deliverables.
Technical Expertise Sought
- Development and quality review of physical layouts and electrical assemblies for medium- and high-voltage substations (greenfield and brownfield).
- Preparation of plan views, section views, and bills of material.
- Routing and design of trenches and conduits.
- Design of low- and medium-voltage AC distribution systems (120V, 240V, 480V).
- Specification and evaluation of substation equipment.
- Familiarity with industry standards and codes (NEC, ANSI, IEEE, NEMA, NESC).
- Performing engineering calculations, including:
- AC service sizing
- Grounding studies
- Lightning and lighting protection
- Conduit fill and sizing
- Experience with AIS (Air-Insulated Substations) and GIS (Gas-Insulated Substations).
- Ability to coordinate closely with structural and civil engineering groups to ensure integrated design.
- PE license (not required).
