As a forward-thinking in-house business unit, our Hampshire Engineering Services offers a range of services to the County Council and other public authorities. We provide design, project management, and financial/contract management services from early stages of a project through to supervision of actual construction.
Our Bridge Design Team is looking for a highly motivated and technically strong Graduate Engineer (Structures) looking to continue his/her professional development and enhance their structural design skills. We have a great team environment, and we enable those with ambition to reach their full potential through a structured training programme and by working on challenging bridge design and maintenance schemes.

The Role:

Working in the Bridge Design Team, you will be directly involved in the design of a wide variety of bridge replacement, strengthening and maintenance schemes, as well as the inspection and assessment of over 1750 highway structures.
You will be an enthusiastic individual with a good degree in Civil Engineering, an understanding of relevant design standards (Eurocodes) and a desire to pursue a structural engineering career. You will also have excellent communication and relationship management skills and an ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of peers, colleagues, and stakeholders.
You will have the option to join our graduate training scheme to help you achieve Chartered Engineer status with ICE or IStructE.

What you’ll do:
  • Working closely with a Senior member of the team produce feasibility studies and carry out non-complex detailed designs, structural assessments and contract documents for new structural work and maintenance projects.
  • Deliver design and assessment projects within allocated budget and timelines.
  • Communicate and liaise with clients, contractors and regulatory and statutory authorities.
  • Comply with the duties of the CDM regulations with respect to the duties of Designers to ensure the safe design and long term management of structures schemes.
  • Be prepared to carry out inspections of bridges and other highway structures with due regard to hazards, safety and risk, and identify, record and evaluate maintenance needs.
  • Work towards achieving Chartered Engineer Status with ICE or IStructE
What we’re looking for:

To be successful in the role you will have the following knowledge, skills and qualifications:

  • Educated to Degree level in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Good knowledge and sound understanding of structural behaviour and materials.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise own workload to ensure that timescales are met.
  • Good understanding of current of Eurocodes, British Standards and assessment codes.
  • Proven communication skills and in particular a high standard of written and oral presentation
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of peers, colleagues, and stakeholders
  • Working knowledge of the application of structural analysis programs.
  • Sound understanding of the CDM Regulations.
  • Desire to pursue a structural engineering career with a positive approach to continued professional development
  • Current divers' licence is essential as the role requires travel to various locations within Hampshire.
