Job Summary

The Structured Cabling Technician II is responsible for installing, terminating, testing, and maintaining structured cabling systems to support commercial and government network infrastructure projects. These positions involve copper and fiber installation, IT closet builds, and equipment setup. The Technician II focuses on hands‑on installation and technical execution, while the Lead Technician additionally oversees crews, manages project progress, and coordinates with clients and project management teams. Both roles offer opportunities for continued training, career growth, and advancement within the telecom and low‑voltage industry.

Job Responsibilities
Technician II Responsibilities
  • Install, route, and secure cable infrastructure, including CAT5/E, CAT6, and fiber optic systems
  • Dress and route cables into IT closets, modular furniture, and outlet locations
  • Install and maintain cable pathways such as J‑hooks, D‑rings, ladder racks, and trays
  • Perform cable management, dressing, labeling, and termination (patch panels, jacks, keystones, RJ‑45 modular plugs)
  • Install and mount equipment such as Wireless Access Points (WAPs), Fiber ONTs, and network switches
  • Assist in IT closet builds, including racks, trays, patch panels, grounding, and labeling
  • Conduct fiber splicing, installation, and testing using Fluke meters and OTDR equipment
  • Read and follow blueprints and installation plans accurately
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment following OSHA and company safety protocols
  • Report progress, issues, and material needs to the Lead Technician or Project Manager
Lead Technician Additional Responsibilities
  • Supervise and mentor installation teams to ensure quality and timely project completion
  • Serve as the primary on‑site contact for general contractors and clients
  • Conduct daily safety meetings and ensure adherence to all safety guidelines
  • Review blueprints and coordinate installation modifications as requiredManage material orders, tool allocation, and labor forecasting
  • Verify testing results, ensure accuracy of as‑built documentation, and submit project reports
  • Communicate change orders and project updates to the Project Manager
  • Support workforce development by training new technicians and ensuring compliance with industry standards
Job Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in structured cabling, low‑voltage, or data cable installation
  • Strong understanding of BICSI installation standards
  • OSHA 10 certification preferredScissor or boom lift certification preferred
  • Hilti, fall protection, and confined space certifications preferred
  • Proficiency in reading blueprints and technical documentation
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and perform quality checks
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work at heights, on ladders, lifts, and in confined spaces
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and perform physical labor for extended periods
Tools Required
  • Basic hand tools: screwdriver (multi‑bit), torpedo level, tape measure, snips, needle‑nose pliers, channel locks, cable stripper, 110/66 punch tool, modular plug crimper, flashlight, hammer, wrench set, gloves, and tool pouch
  • Work boots (steel toe or composite toe) required
Additional Job Details
  • Must comply with all company and site‑specific safety regulations
