Job description
Overview

The Building Safety Regulator (BSR) is seeking technically qualified structural engineers to help the building control team assess and decide upon building applications (Gateway 2 and Gateway 3) for higher‑rise buildings. Join us at a pivotal time as BSR transitions to an Arm´s Length Body (ALB) of MHCLG and moves out of HSE.

Working Pattern

Part‑time working hours are available. Applicants must be able to commit to a minimum of 30 hours per week.

Responsibilities
  • Provide specialist structural advice to BSR and multidisciplinary teams for Gateway 2 (approval) and Gateway 3 (completion) assessments.
  • Review technical submissions, identify gaps or concerns, and advise MDTs and Regulatory Leads on regulatory interventions.
  • Participate in technical case discussions, validation meetings and decision panels to address structural safety risks.
  • Contribute to the development of operational decision‑making tools, including enforcement guidance, technical validation checklists and competency standards.
Travel

Occasional travel to other HSE offices and inspection sites may be required.

Security

Successful candidates must undergo a criminal record check and complete baseline personnel security standard checks.

Nationality Requirements
  • UK nationals
  • National of the Republic of Ireland
  • National of Commonwealth countries with right to work in the UK
  • National of EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein and family members with settled or pre‑settled status under EUSS
  • Turkish nationals and certain family members with accrued right to work in the Civil Service
  • Other individuals with limited leave to remain or indefinite leave to remain eligible for EUSS on or before 31 Dec 2020
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Level 6 (Degree) qualified in building studies, construction, civil engineering, surveying or another relevant discipline.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional association such as Institution of Structural Engineers, Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, Royal Institute of British Architects, Institution of Civil Engineers or equivalent.
  • Broad base of relevant structural safety knowledge and engineering experience.
  • Experience reviewing or advising on higher risk building designs or remediation projects.
  • Strong communication, analytical, organisational and planning skills.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively across disciplines and support regulatory decision‑making.
