Staff Nurse - Liver Outpatient Department

We are looking for a Band 5 staff nurse who can autonomously work in a fast‑paced department that sees over 200 patients a day. You will be part of a very dynamic and diverse team.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to carry out cannulation and venepuncture, access PICC line and other intravenous catheters or willingness to learn.
- Will be expected to learn and assist with venesection safely.
- Provide assistance in caring for patients having out paracentesis.
- Take and record patients' vital signs accurately.
- Willing to learn other skill sets required to work in a liver outpatient, such as fibro‑scanning.
- Be well informed and proficient in the use of modern technology, especially computers.
- Punctual and reliable member of the team.
Main duties of the job
- Work in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, Trust Policies and Procedures.
- Set agreed standards of nursing care, monitor these and take action to improve if necessary.
- Ensure all patients receive appropriate follow‑up and that relevant information is available to enable patients to make an informed choice about their treatment and care.
- Support patients with decision making about their care or treatment, ensuring shared decision making.
- Communicate effectively with patients, their relatives and carers and all healthcare personnel.
- Ensure clear documentation in the patient’s records of all significant consultations in accordance with Best Records Keeping Guidance.
- Be fully involved in the health education of patients and relatives, taking every opportunity to promote a healthy lifestyle.
- Promote a holistic and multi‑disciplinary approach to care, ensuring continuity of care in the outpatient setting.
- Ensure the effective and efficient use of clinic rooms in Liver Outpatient for the purpose of ambulatory services.

- Liaising with discharge coordinator / bed manager to ensure effective admission/discharge of patients.
- Keeping the ward/unit sister / charge nurse informed of significant changes and/or anticipated problems.
Upholding a duty of care and clinical governance through:
- Observing a general duty of care for the health, safety and well‑being of yourself, work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital.
- Ensuring the rules, policies, procedures and standards of Kings College Hospital NHS Trust Foundation together with all relevant statutory and professional obligations are adhered to at all times.
- Maintaining patient confidentiality, dignity and privacy at all times.

- Acting as practice supervisor and/or preceptor/mentor for junior and newly‑qualified staff.
- Working with appropriate members of the teaching staff to ensure effective staff development (own and others).
- Participating in Trust and Divisional initiatives to develop nursing practice and support change.
Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (RN1) with active NMC registration at the time of starting appointment.
Knowledge and Experience
- Clinical expertise relevant to the area.
Skills and Competencies
- Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal).
- Ability to work collaboratively with other staff members.
