Overview

This new innovation is born out of a vision to create a sustainable future for the urological specialist nursing team; it intends to turn a novice into an expert urological nurse.

The successful candidate will rotate through all aspects of urological nursing, embracing a rich learning opportunity. They will be responsible for assessing patient needs, developing care programmes, and implementing and evaluating care plans.

Responsibilities
  • To provide a high standard of clinical nursing within the ward/department.
  • To manage a group of patients.
  • To take charge of the ward department when rostered and assessed as competent, and to assume the roles and responsibilities of leadership and supervision.
  • To act as a role model to students and Clinical Support Workers.
  • To present a positive, professional image of the organisation and of the nursing team.
  • To communicate using a range of methods to ensure a caring, sensitive, and empathetic manner to patients and their relatives; to share sensitive information with the health‑care team and, with patient consent, with relatives.
  • To demonstrate excellent communication skills when dealing with difficult situations, provide clear and concise handover to other team members, and escalate concerns about a patient’s condition to senior nursing and medical staff.
  • To initiate referrals to other members of the healthcare team and to report ward and departmental affairs to the LUN/ACP Matron, Sister/Charge Nurse, and to participate in discussions and ward departmental meetings.
  • To ensure that patient concerns are addressed through liaison with senior staff.
  • To remain connected and a valued member of the urological specialist nursing team.
  • To communicate in a professional manner with all patients and visitors to the ward/department.
  • To promote equality and diversity, ensuring that the individual needs of patients and their families are recognised, and to take personal responsibility for ensuring accurate communication relating to patient discharge.
Professional Development

All employees will take part in the appraisal process each year, with the first appraisal occurring within the first six months of appointment.
