Overview

The role's variety will keep things fresh and stimulating whilst being part of a supportive team with effective management providing supervision/guidance. You will focus on the importance of occupation in a person's recovery and wellbeing and on the importance of routine and activities of daily living, advising on strategies and techniques to manage personal care and other activities within the prison.

The post holder will be responsible for working across the establishment, dependent on service need and for managing a complex caseload. As an advanced speech and language therapist, you will be responsible for clinical and caseload supervision and the training of other team members such as Speech and Language Therapy Assistants.

The post will lead the Speech and Language Therapy contribution to assessment, interventions, care planning and evaluation. The overall purpose of the post is to ensure that individuals who are referred to Speech and Language Therapy have their communication needs assessed and to provide interventions and recommendations based on the needs identified. The Speech and Language Therapist will incorporate this into an overall formulation of need and appropriate plan of care.

The post holder will be available for consultation, support and clinical supervision to other health professionals working within the In-patient Service and other areas of the Trust where identified as appropriate. To be an involved and contributing member of the multi disciplinary team (which includes RMNs, social worker, occupational therapist, psychiatrist, psychologist, psychosocial workers and team administrators).

Responsibilities
  • Involved and contributing member of the multi disciplinary team (RMNs, social worker, occupational therapist, psychiatrist, psychologist, psychosocial workers and team administrators).
  • Responsible for the assessment, review, risk assessment and case management of people with varying levels of complexities.
  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality Speech and Language Therapy assessment, interventions and evaluations across forensic in-patient services.
  • Provide specific communication assessments and advice, as part of the single assessment process, culminating in an agreed plan of action and/or care and intervention. This includes the use of recognised/agreed standardised Speech and Language Therapy assessment tools alongside profession specific and generic outcome measures.
  • Carry out specialist assessments (within service specification) to identify communication needs for in-patient service users and, if indicated, develop an agreed action plan of care.
  • Liaise with and advise service users and carers, local authority, and other statutory bodies and third sector agencies.
