Qualifications

RatedOutstanding by the Care Quality Commission, Prospect Hospice is the leadingprovider of specialist end-of-life care across Swindon, northeast Wiltshire,and parts of Gloucestershire. Our purpose-built hospice in Wroughton, justoutside Swindon, provides inpatient, outpatient, and community-based servicesto over 300,000 people.

Hours:

1clinical day per week (mostly community)

+non-resident on-call for our in-patient unit (IPU) and community (1 OOH evening& night /week)

+ 1 in 4 weekends based on IPU

What isthe role?

You willprovide expert palliative medical care to patients on our 6-bed Inpatient Unit(IPU), working closely with a dedicated multidisciplinary team includingspecialist nurses, therapists, family support workers, and psychotherapists.

Main duties of the job

Your role will include:

  • One clinical day per week, usually in the community working with our Clinical Nurse Specialists (2 pas)
  • Participation in the non-resident out-of-hours rota:
  • One overnight per week (17:00 to 09:00)
  • One weekend in four (IPU ward round and potential admissions; remote cover overnight). The hospice consultant or Supportive Care UK consultants provide second on-call cover.
  • Opportunities to contribute to clinical governance, education, audit, and quality improvement

The medical team consists of a Hospice Consultant, Specialty Doctors, GP trainees and an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. Remote support is also provided by Supportive Care UK.

What We Are Looking For

We are seeking a passionate and experienced doctor who is committed to delivering high-quality, holistic care at the end of life. The post would be suitable for those who wish to gain experience and skills in specialist palliative medicine or consolidate/expand on knowledge and skills they already have.>

About us

Prospect Hospice is an independent hospice supporting a community of300,000 people in Swindon, Marlborough and North Wiltshire, and the villages ofLechlade and Fairford in Gloucestershire.

It is the only dedicated provider ofspecialist end of life care services within it's locality. The Hospicesmulti-professionals teams support people in the community, in care homes, atthe Great Western Hospital and at the Hospice in Wroughton. Care is alsoextended to the families and friends of patients.

Job responsibilities
  • When working on the IPU: To be responsible for day-to-day medical management of patients in the In-patient Unit, including admissions, clinical meetings, ward rounds, and close working with the multidisciplinary team.
  • When working in the Community: To provide support to the Community CNS team and to see patients either in their own homes or as out-patients
  • To be responsible for generating and maintaining patient records, including inputting patient information onto databases.
  • To be responsible for death certifications and for the completion of associated administrative requirements.
  • To identify and meet the palliative needs of patients including the physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs and also the emotional and psychological care needs of their relatives and friends.
  • To assess the changing medical needs of day patients, outpatients, or home care patients as required.
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Minimum 4 years postgraduate training (at least 2 years in relevant specialties)
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
  • A genuine interest in or experience of palliative medicine
  • Previous experience in hospice or specialist palliative care settings
  • Interest in teaching, service development or audit/QI

Additional Information

You must live within 45 minutes of Prospect Hospice when on-call.

  • Ability to take responsibility for the clinical care of patients with the support of the consultant.
  • Demonstrate ability to manage priorities.
  • Ability to supervise more junior members of the medical team.
  • Good MSOffice and IT skills.
  • Ability to cope and be resourceful in sometimes challenging and stressful situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, the multidisciplinary team, hospital staff, GPs and other agencies.
