Job summary

A leading health service is seeking a motivated Specialist Paediatric Pharmacist to provide expert clinical pharmacy services at Wexham Park Hospital. The successful candidate will work within multidisciplinary teams, lead and participate in clinical audits and support junior staff. This role focuses on medicines optimisation and patient safety initiatives. Ideal candidates are passionate about paediatric care and eager to make a positive impact on patient outcomes. Competitive salary offered between £50,008 to £56,908 annually.

Qualifications

  • Pharmacy degree (Master level 4 years).
  • Registered with GPhC.
  • Within 12 months of completion of Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent.

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Specialist Paediatric Pharmacist to join our innovative pharmacy team at Wexham Park Hospital.

In this role, you will provide expert clinical pharmacy services across paediatric and neonatal wards, working closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, effective, and patient-centred use of medicines.

You will play a key role in medicines optimisation, patient safety initiatives, and the development of clinical protocols.

You will have opportunities to:

Lead and participate in clinical audits and service improvement projects.

Contribute to staff education and training.

Support and mentor junior pharmacy staff, acting as a role model for best practice.

Help shape and develop paediatric pharmacy services within the Trus.t

Main duties of the job
  • To develop and deliver a high-quality clinical pharmacy service to patients within the specialist paediatric area, including the Neonatal Unit (NNU).
  • To provide expert clinical pharmacy input, ensuring the safe, effective, and evidence-based use of medicines in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
  • To lead on the ongoing development and improvement of paediatric pharmacy services, contributing to medicines optimisation and patient safety initiatives.
  • To act as a role model for clinical pharmacy practice, maintaining a consistently high standard of care in line with Trust and Pharmacy Department objectives.
  • To support, supervise, and mentor junior pharmacy staff and trainees, promoting professional development and best practice.

Job responsibilities
  • To work collaboratively with Lead Pharmacists, clinicians, nurses and senior managers to develop and deliver pharmaceutical services within paediatrics and neonatology.
  • To provide a comprehensive clinical pharmacy service to neonatal and paediatric wards, and other clinical areas as required, including medicines reconciliation, optimisation, clinical review, discharge planning, patient counselling and attendance at ward rounds.
  • To assess pharmaceutical care needs, initiate and monitor care plans, advise on drug selection and dosing, and provide medicines-related advice to healthcare staff in line with Trust policies and current legislation.
  • To support the development, implementation and monitoring of clinical protocols, promoting safe use, supply and storage of medicines.
  • To contribute to service development, clinical governance, audit and research activities, and participate in relevant committees.
  • To promote cost-effective prescribing in line with Trust formulary, policies and tertiary centre guidance.
  • To support medicines evaluation and Drugs & Therapeutics Committee processes.
  • To provide leadership, supervision, education and training for pharmacy staff, doctors, nurses and students, and act as an independent prescriber in line with Trust guidance.
  • To participate in dispensary services, on-call, late duty, weekend and bank holiday rotas as required.

  • Pharmacy degree (Master level 4 years)

  • Within 12 months of completion of Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy / Pharmacy Practice or equivalent
  • Independent pharmacist Prescriber
  • Completion of Diploma in Clinical Practice OR equivalent
Experience/knowledge
  • Ability to train others
  • Ability to present data effectively as evidence based reports/cases
  • Evidence of up to date CPD in clinical pharmacy
  • Member of UKCPA
  • Member of Royal Pharmaceutical Society
  • Practical experience of audit
  • Member of NNPG
Skills
  • Recent Hospital Clinical Pharmacy experience
  • oPost-registration provision of clinical pharmacy service to a broad range of clinical specialities
