Specialist Dietitian in Acute Medicine

The University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic dietitian to work in the acute hospital based at Royal Stoke University Hospital. You will be leading the clinical service for acute medicine inpatients working with operational leads and Chief Dietitian at UHNM.

The successful applicant will be working within inpatient and outpatient caseloads working closely with a well-established dietetic team which comprises of over 60 dietitians and dietetic assistants in a range of specialties.

The successful applicant will have significant clinical experience in medicine, in particular nutrition support and enteral tube feeding. The case load will comprise of complex medical patients, including respiratory and disordered eating presentations within an acute setting. You will demonstrate excellent communication skills and be able to evidence their continuing professional development. You will have proven leadership skills and an ability to implement and sustain change.

We offer a wide range of dietetic services and specialties in one of the UK's largest Acute Trusts. The post holder joins a large team of dietitians within the Nutrition and Dietetic department working with nurses, caterers and Speech and Language therapists to deliver dietetic care to patients in a busy acute environment.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will work as an specialist practitioner dietitian leading the clinical delivery of care for acute medicine, to include specialist respiratory, cardiothoracic and complex medicine, contributing to the work of the dietetic team at the University Hospital North Midlands (UHNM) .The role will support Chief Dietitian with relevant Trust initiatives e.g Tissue Viability Working Group, Nutrition Steering Group, and link with Adult protection teams as required.

The post holder will work with the operational leads to continue to develop the role of the dietitian in line with Trust priorities. Will develop clinical pathways to ensure safe care medical including admission areas.

The post holder will assess and treat own specialist caseload of patients/clients and maintain associated records. Working as advanced specialist dietitian providing advice within UHNM or as requested by other Provider units and organisations.

The post holder will lead on service evaluation and student training for their specialty and support leadership and service improvement initiatives within the Dietetics department.

Job responsibilities
  • To work as part of the multi‑disciplinary team leading and providing dietetic input to patients in specialty and to liaise with other disciplines and agencies as required in the planning and implementation of patient care
  • To educate patients and their relatives / carers about their condition and its significance and ensure that care information and support is available.
  • To develop and maintain links with local specialist patient support groups as appropriate.
  • To use negotiating and persuasive skills to facilitate effective service delivery within the specialty team.
  • To liaise with dietitians within the team and ensure overall prioritisation of workload within the team supporting other members as appropriate.
  • To maintain lines of communication within the Directorate
  • To actively participate in ward meetings, ward rounds, case conferences as appropriate.
  • To liaise with and work as an integral member of the multi-disciplinary team, building and maintaining effective working relationships.

Qualifications
  • Registered dietitian (with relevant BSc, postgraduate diploma or masters)

Experience
  • Post graduate experience in NHS with considerable experience in medicine.
  • Experience of working as a senior dietitian in nutrition support
  • Trained clinical educator
  • Demonstrate ability to have been involved in audit and evaluation of own dietetic work including collection of outcomes and other relevant quality indicators
  • Experience of working in different clinical settings
  • Willingness to support pre‑registration practice training for student dietitians
