Overview

This vacancy is specifically for a 0.6 WTE Bacteriology post. Candidates will be given speciality interview questions to answer on the day.

South West London Pathology is an award-winning pathology partnership between four Hospital Trusts — St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Croydon Health Services NHS Trust and Epsom & St. Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust — designed to provide an integrated, high quality pathology service for hospitals and GPs across South West London.

The Microbiology department at St George's has state-of-the-art equipment, offering full laboratory automation and a vast array of molecular platforms. The department prides itself on its innovative and progressive approach to Microbiology.

Microbiology at SWLP is looking for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join our dynamic, friendly team. You will be deployed in Microbiology at the St George's site. The department offers the latest equipment in the Microbiology field with three Kiestra lines, MALDI-ToF technology, Uri-system, Liaison XLs, EntericBio, BD FX, MGIT and Phoenix. There is an automated Serology track system and a specialised Molecular service including high throughput analysers. The department also offers an extensive latent TB screening program for the London region. The post holder will be expected to have good knowledge and experience in Microbiology in addition to being able to demonstrate excellent problem solving skills. You will be expected to participate in a 24/7 shift system which includes weekend, night, late and bank holiday working as part of hours.

Job responsibilities

Provides specialist technical services to patients that may include research and audit samples. Contributes to providing a professional clinical laboratory service, working effectively as a team member as part of the overall department. Able to perform all core scientific and interpretive work, which corresponds to the training and qualifications of a Registered Biomedical Scientist. To assist in training and supervising staff and deputising for the Advanced Biomedical Scientist when necessary.

  • Hold the IBMS Specialist Diploma in relevant discipline or equivalent experience
