Software Engineer - Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform

Job Summary

To provide consultancy services to customers on the planning, installation, configuration and management of Red Hat’s OpenShift Container Platform based on recognised best practices.

To act as a technical focal point for OpenShift and related technologies within Tier 2, including ongoing involvement in the OpenShift Commons community.

To be responsible for the installation, configuration and ongoing management of Tier 2’s cloud infrastructure, including AWS and OpenShift.

Our Location

Subject to restrictions, the role will primarily be based in Stevenage, Herts , with a requirement to occasionally work on customer sites throughout the UK & Ireland, and potentially mainland Europe.

As we emerge from the pandemic, we will be offering a balance between home, office and client‑site working.

The Role

Reporting to the Head of Middleware, the Container Platform Consultant will perform a key role in helping our customers design and implement their digital transformation strategy on Red Hat’s OpenShift Container Platform. Although all underpinned by technical expertise, the assignments will be many and varied, and will include,

For example
  • Planning and performing the installation and configuration of OpenShift Container Platform on hybrid cloud environments – to include a combination of on‑premise, AWS and Azure;
  • Deployment and configuration of containerised services on OpenShift Container Platform, such as Jenkins, Red Hat Runtimes and integration services such as Red Hat Fuse and AMQ;
  • Design and development of CI / CD pipelines in OpenShift;
  • Design and development of custom Operators for automating Kubernetes tasks in OpenShift;
  • Assisting customers with the migration of non‑containerised applications onto OpenShift;
  • Guiding customers through the on‑boarding process of cloud‑hosted services such as Red Hat OpenShift Dedicated and Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS (ROSA);
  • Planning and running technical skills transfer workshops for customer development, operations and DevOps teams;
  • Assisting with the installation, configuration and ongoing maintenance of Tier 2’s internal cloud infrastructure, comprising Amazon EC2 instances and OpenShift environments;
  • Acting as a technical focal point for OpenShift and related technologies within Tier 2, including ongoing involvement in the OpenShift Commons community;
  • Development of technical blog posts and case studies.
Skills and experience
  • At least 3 years’ experience as a Linux Systems Engineer (preferably with RHCE qualification) including installing, configuring and maintaining Linux server environments;
  • Practical experience, including installation and maintenance, of container technologies, e.g. Docker and Kubernetes;
  • Practical experience of configuration management / deployment automation tools such as Ansible, Puppet, and Chef;
  • Experience of working with the leading cloud platforms, such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure;
  • Experience of working in a DevOps environment;
  • Sound knowledge of data serialisation languages such as JSON and YAML;
  • Exposure to both Windows and Linux operating systems;
  • Familiarity with standard DevOps tools such as Git, Jenkins, TeamCity etc;
  • Use of monitoring tools such as Kibana, Nagios, Grafana, Prometheus, etc.
The following experience would also be an advantage
  • Middleware technologies such as web or application platforms, message brokers, etc;
  • Software‑Defined Networking configuration, and familiarity with networking components such as software or hardware load balancers;
  • Software‑Defined Storage solutions such as Ceph and Gluster;
  • Exposure to an agile development environment, using tools such as Jira and Confluence.
The successful candidate must
  • Be educated to degree level (or similar), or have the breadth and depth of relevant experience and can demonstrate the skills relevant to this role;
  • Have excellent communication skills, and have the ability to build and maintain communication directly with clients to ensure good customer service;
  • Be able to work independently, as well as part of a larger Tier 2 or customer team;
  • Be adaptable in the roles they may be asked to perform on assignments – for example, working in a customer‑facing consultative role, as well as within a Tier 2 development team;
  • Be eligible to work in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
