Software Developer Apprentice – Level 3

Location: Head Office based Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm
Contract: Full-time, Apprenticeship
Salary: Apprenticeship rate (dependent on age/experience)

Joseph Gallagher Limited is a leading civil engineering and construction business delivering complex projects across the UK and internationally. As part of our continued growth and digital development, we are looking for a Software Developer Apprentice to join our team.

This is an exciting opportunity to start a career in coding and software development while working towards a Level 3 Software Developer Apprenticeship.

About the Apprenticeship

You will be enrolled on the Level 3 Software Developer Apprenticeship, a nationally recognised qualification designed for individuals starting out in software development. The programme covers core coding skills, software testing, problem-solving, and development best practices, alongside real workplace experience.

About the Role

As a Software Developer Apprentice, you will support the development, maintenance, and improvement of internal systems, tools, and applications used across the business. You’ll work alongside experienced colleagues to learn how software solutions support operational and commercial functions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assisting with the development of software applications and internal tools
  • Writing, testing, and debugging code under supervision
  • Supporting system improvements and automation projects
  • Assisting with data handling, reporting tools, or dashboards
  • Documenting code and development processes
  • Supporting testing, fixes, and updates to existing systems
  • Learning and following secure coding and data protection practices
  • Working collaboratively with IT and business teams
About You

We’re looking for someone with a genuine interest in coding and software development who wants to build a long‑term career in tech.

You will ideally have:

  • A strong interest in programming and technology
  • Some exposure to coding (e.g. Python, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, SQL, or similar – through study or self‑learning)
  • Logical thinking and problem‑solving skills
  • Good attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills and a willingness to learn
  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths (or willingness to work towards them)

Formal development experience is not required; curiosity, commitment, and enthusiasm are key.
