About Us

We are an established, multi-disciplinary construction contractor with a long history of delivering high-quality infrastructure, civil engineering and highways services across the South West of England and Wales. Our highways division delivers a wide range of planned and reactive infrastructure, maintenance and improvement works for public sector clients and principal contractors, with a strong focus on safety, quality and reliability.

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Highways Setting Out Engineer to join our highways team. You will be responsible for surveying, setting out and engineering support across multiple live projects, working closely with site teams to ensure precision and accuracy in the delivery of highways, infrastructure and civil engineering works. This role requires regular travel between project locations within the South West.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interpret and work from engineering drawings and designs to set out road alignments, levels, gradients and key infrastructure points on highway schemes.
  • Carry out accurate measurement and setting out surveys for carriageway construction, drainage, kerbing, footways, traffic management and associated civils works.
  • Take responsibility for establishing and maintaining site control points, benchmarks and grid coordinates.
  • Work with project leads, site managers and subcontractors to ensure setting out is coordinated with construction activities.
  • Assist in verifying as-built levels and providing site reports to confirm compliance with specification standards.
  • Liaise with clients, local authorities and stakeholders where required during on‑site activities.
  • Ensure all setting out work meets relevant quality, health, safety and environmental standards.
What You'll Need
  • Proven experience as a Setting Out Engineer in highways, civils or infrastructure projects.
  • Valid CSCS card (or equivalent) and relevant setting‑out / construction qualifications.
  • Strong experience using setting‑out equipment (total station, GPS survey kit, levels, datums etc).
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel between sites throughout the South West region.
  • Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Desirable Experience
  • Previous work on highways maintenance, Section 278 works, carriageway construction, drainage and public realm schemes.
  • Understanding of highway design standards and adoptable local authority specifications.
  • Experience coordinating with multi‑disciplinary site teams and contractors.
