A prestigious insurance company is seeking a Senior Syndicate Accountant to join its high-performing Finance team in London. This contract role offers you the chance to play a pivotal part in shaping the financial integrity of Lloyd's syndicates, ensuring robust regulatory compliance and delivering insightful analysis across quarterly and annual reporting cycles. You will be welcomed into a collaborative environment where your expertise will directly influence business outcomes, and you'll have the opportunity to work closely with senior stakeholders across finance, actuarial, and underwriting functions.

  • Join a collaborative and knowledgeable Finance team that values intentional collaboration, open communication, and shared success, providing you with opportunities to contribute meaningfully from day one.
What you'll do:

As a Senior Syndicate Accountant based in London, you will immerse yourself in a varied role that places you at the centre of financial operations for Lloyd's syndicates. Your days will be filled with meaningful tasks such as reviewing complex underwriting results alongside actuarial colleagues, preparing insightful commentary for senior management that drives business understanding, and supporting critical regulatory submissions. You will also play an integral part in maintaining statutory records according to rigorous standards while participating in forward-thinking projects aimed at enhancing systems or adapting processes in response to evolving regulations.

  • Review and challenge monthly and quarterly finance close processes by thoroughly examining Syndicate underwriting results to ensure accuracy, completeness, and alignment with overall business performance.
  • Collaborate closely with the Actuarial team to review reserves movements in Syndicate results, ensuring these are robustly calculated, fully documented, and accurately reflected in all relevant financial statements.
  • Produce detailed commentary for senior management on Syndicate results, including late adjustments, bridging analysis between periods, class-of-business reviews, and comprehensive balance sheet analytics.
  • Support the preparation of Lloyd's regulatory returns such as QMA, QMB, US, Canadian, and UK tax filings for the syndicates while contributing actively to the annual Statement of Actuarial Opinion (SAO) review process.
  • Maintain statutory books and records in strict accordance with internal accounting policies as well as Lloyd's requirements to guarantee full compliance at all times.
  • Participate in finance-related projects that may include system enhancements, process improvements, or regulatory change initiatives impacting financial reporting standards or practices.
  • Engage confidently with stakeholders across finance, actuarial, underwriting teams as well as external auditors to ensure transparency and clarity in all communications regarding financial data.
  • Utilise advanced MS Excel skills-including pivot tables, IF statements, VLOOKUPs-and other MS Office applications to manage large datasets efficiently and produce accurate reports.
  • Contribute proactively towards automation initiatives and system enhancements within financial reporting processes to drive efficiency gains across the department.
  • Ensure all activities adhere strictly to risk management protocols and regulatory compliance frameworks established by both internal governance structures and external authorities.
What you bring:

To excel as a Senior Syndicate Accountant in this leading organisation's Finance team, you will bring not only technical qualifications but also substantial hands‑on experience from within the insurance sector, preferably gained through direct involvement with Lloyd's syndicates or similar environments. Your proven ability to analyse complex underwriting results will be matched by your skill at producing clear commentary that supports informed decision‑making at senior levels. You will demonstrate advanced proficiency in Excel-based data manipulation alongside familiarity with broader MS Office tools; any additional experience using Oracle Financials or Lloyd's‑specific systems will further distinguish your profile. Your interpersonal strengths, especially your capacity for empathetic communication, will enable you to build trust quickly among colleagues from different disciplines. A keen eye for detail ensures accuracy throughout all aspects of your work while your enthusiasm for process improvement means you are always looking for ways to enhance efficiency or adapt workflows proactively. Above all else, your commitment to responsible risk management ensures every task is completed with care for both compliance requirements and organisational reputation.

  • Qualified accountant status (ACCA, ACA, CIMA) or equivalent qualification with significant experience gained within financial services-ideally within the insurance market or specifically Lloyd's market environments.
  • Extensive background working in complex financial services settings as part of Syndicate or Company Insurance Accounting teams where collaboration is key.
  • Proven track record in financial accounting roles involving regular review of insurance underwriting results coupled with strong analytical capabilities.
  • Advanced proficiency using MS Excel, including pivot tables, IF statements, VLOOKUPs, and solid working knowledge of other MS Office applications for effective data handling.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills enabling confident engagement with stakeholders across multiple disciplines including finance, actuarial science, underwriting teams and external auditors.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail when interpreting complex financial data sets combined with an ability to produce clear commentary for management audiences.
  • A proactive approach towards identifying opportunities for process improvements or automation initiatives within financial reporting functions.
  • Familiarity with Oracle Financials and TM1 is desirable along with experience using Lloyd's-specific systems such as LCA (Lloyd's Core Application), Xchanging platforms, iXBRL tagging tools or market data collection solutions.
  • Experience supporting regulatory compliance efforts through preparation of statutory returns (QMA/QMB/US/Canadian/UK tax filings) as well as involvement in Statement of Actuarial Opinion (SAO) reviews.
  • Commitment to upholding risk management protocols while working independently yet collaboratively within a wider team context.
