Overview

The NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service (SPS) is advertising a newly established cross-functional post (1.0 WTE) for a Senior Specialist Pharmacist in Medicines Advice (MA) and Medicines Use and Safety (MUS). This is hosted by Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and is expected to be worked remotely. Closing date: 24 September 2025.

This is a Band 8A pharmacist opportunity within SPS, created to work across the MA and MUS functions and to contribute to pan-SPS projects.

Responsibilities
  • Sit within both the MA and MUS functions of the NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service; work with key individuals to deliver against the workplan of both functions, including pan-SPS projects
  • Contribute to the development, delivery and maintenance of quality-assured MA and MUS resources to support commissioners, organisations, and health professionals. Resources may include webinars, podcasts, videos, website articles and NHS Futures workspaces
  • Support senior colleagues with information to support national drug shortages and the Medicines Awareness Daily Bulletin (MAD)
  • Answer medication-related queries, including those related to medicines supply issues, Patient Group Directions (PGDs) and other medicines mechanisms and medication safety

Medicines Use and Safety (MUS) team

Our MUS team is a well-respected group that works with policy makers, regulators and strategic leaders, engaging with clinical networks to share experience. We interpret legislation and provide practical guidance to NHS organisations and practitioners to support safe patient care across the medicines pathway, helping healthcare professionals assess and improve medication safety culture, strategy and policy.

Medicines Advice (MA) team

The MA team supports a national medicines clinical enquiry service, providing ongoing support to the Medicines Supply team at DHSC and the Medicines Procurement and Supply Chain (MPSC) on medicines shortages. We produce the Medicines Awareness Daily bulletin, which has circulated for over two decades, and contribute to SPS webpages to support best practice and safe use of medicines.

Job responsibilities
  • The post-holder will sit within both the MA and MUS functions of the NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service; work with key individuals to deliver against the workplan of both functions, including pan-SPS projects
  • Contribute to the development, delivery and maintenance of quality-assured MA and MUS workstream resources to support commissioners, organisations, and health professionals. Resources may include webinars, podcasts, videos, website articles and workspaces on NHS Futures
  • Support the MA and MUS team to improve legacy material and create new website content, working with the SPS Digital Team and applying agile approaches aligned to NHS Digital and gov.uk content standards
  • Answer medication-related queries, including those related to medicines supply issues, PGDs and other medicines mechanisms, and Medication Safety
Qualifications
  • Vocational masters degree in pharmacy or equivalent
  • Registered Pharmacist (GPhC)
  • Postgraduate diploma in clinical pharmacy or other relevant field (e.g., management) or equivalent experience
  • Additional postgraduate qualification (e.g., MSc in Clinical Pharmacy) or equivalent experience
Experience
  • Diploma-level experience related to clinical pharmacy practice in diverse settings
  • Multidisciplinary working and ability to collaborate across professional groups and organisations
  • Significant experience delivering medicines advice to healthcare professionals
  • Experience supporting healthcare professionals and organisations in medicines shortages and NHS supply issues
  • Experience managing difficult situations and motivating others for service delivery
  • Experience working in a complex matrix environment within a diffuse national organisation
  • Experience in relevant MUS workstreams (e.g., medication safety, PGDs, medicines optimization, network engagement)
Knowledge
  • In-depth knowledge of medicines optimization in primary and secondary care
  • Awareness of roles of other healthcare professionals in delivering care
  • Understanding of programme and project management
  • Knowledge of NHS policy and its application across care settings, including DHSC, NHSE, providers and commissioners
  • Understanding of SPS medicines advice and its role in medicines optimization
  • Experience with content management systems for publishing online content and knowledge of good online publishing principles
