Responsible for leading projects to deliver the agreed outcomes within time, cost and quality requirements. Guides and coordinates with relevant parties to understand and deliver project objectives and key performance indicators (KPIs), providing day‑to‑day management and leadership of the project and its team. Delivers internal fee expectations (where appropriate) together with risk mitigation and change management.

The project:

Mace has a significant track record in the education sector, working with schools, colleges, local authorities and central government to deliver ‘landmarks for learning’ nationally. We have visions of sustainable, flexible and future‑ready projects. Mace is the leading consultant for the Department for Education (DfE) and is delivering projects across all principal capital programmes—Schools Re‑building Programme (SRP), free schools, special educational needs and further education (colleges).

We are seeking lead technical advisors/project managers who want to further their careers and lead multidisciplinary teams across new build, refurbishment, remodelling and carbon reduction schemes. Mace’s in‑house multidisciplinary services—design, cost, information management, sustainability and health & safety—provide an integrated end‑to‑end service with a single point of accountability.

These are client‑facing roles deploying strategy, initial design, contractor appointment and contract management. They also support the client’s property objectives, BIM, off‑site construction, soft landings, social value creation, and people and skills development. Projects routinely require NZC in operation and sometimes in construction.

  • Provides subject‑matter knowledge to support teams from the broader Mace projects and business units to assure best outcomes.
  • Procures and manages design and wider consultant teams and stakeholders to ensure effective completion of responsibilities including brief, scope, fees, claims, deliverables and/or variations. Actively supports collaboration of all parties.
  • Produces design and authorities programme (or works with a planner to produce) integrated with procurement and delivery programme.
  • Manages timely and successful delivery from inception/brief through planning, procurement and construction in line with the delivery programme and agreed milestones and is accountable for scope of works relating to the portfolio.
  • Delivers objectives in line with the Project Execution Plan, leads and manages the team and stakeholders to achieve strategic KPIs.
  • Prep and modifies where necessary plans and keeps them updated over the project's course.
  • Oversees timeframes and budgets, ensuring successful delivery, highlighting risks, challenges and mitigations.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders and ensures robust quality systems are in place, managed and monitored with Service Excellence.
  • Leads and records relevant meetings, providing contextual analysis.
  • Partners with stakeholders and actively involved in risk management and mitigation treatments.
  • Effectively coordinates and communicates with all stakeholders, ensuring completion of tasks and maintaining records.
  • Takes ownership of changes, tracking changes and ensures they are progressed and formalised within agreed timeframes.

You’ll need to have:
  • Proven successful experience in project management, managing medium sized projects.
  • Developed communication, presentation and project planning and development skills.

  • Proven understanding of project management methodologies and practices. Display strong communication and negotiation skills to support the client.

  • Developed bidding skills.
  • Proficient knowledge and expertise in specific sector/market of project/role.
  • Relevant technical qualification or certification for portfolio/s.
  • Sound technical expertise in Health and Safety Executive (HSE) or local equivalent rules and sector/market regulations relevant to portfolio.
  • Knowledge of consultancy, construction, infrastructure and property sectors/markets and understanding of estimating, scheduling, contracts administration, procurement, commercial controls and reporting.

  • Tertiary qualifications in related (project management and/or construction related discipline), non‑related degree or equivalent professional experience/apprenticeship, combined with a demonstrable intermediate level of role knowledge. Appropriate Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card or local equivalent.
You’ll also have:
  • Membership of RICS, CIOB, APM, ICE or equivalent demonstrable professional or personal development.
  • Substantial experience in the successful delivery phase of projects and programmes in the DfE sector.
  • Property or infrastructure project management experience.
  • Commercial and financial acumen.
  • Experience of leading parts of projects within large, diverse teams.
  • Experience of developing and forming relationships with senior stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of how carbon and sustainability considerations will shape the outlook of the projects you are working on.
