Job description

Overview

We have an opportunity for a suitably qualified, motivated and experienced Paediatric Radiographer to extend and share their experience within our friendly Imaging team at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital, located on the same site as the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.

We are one of the leading children’s centres on the Southeast coast for tertiary and general paediatrics in a variety of specialities, including surgery, gastroenterology, diabetes, respiratory medicine, oncology care and day care services. We also have a busy 24 hour dedicated children’s emergency department, theatre suite and high dependency unit.

If you feel that you can act as a role model, have the desire to teach and lead others, have good organisational skills, the ability to prioritise tasks and can effectively liaise with other departments, you may be the person our department needs. In return for your commitment we will provide ongoing support for your professional development, as well as a friendly, challenging and stimulating work environment.

37.5 hours with a commitment to the out of hours service.

Responsibilities
  • As a Paediatric Radiographer for the Paediatric Imaging Service, help ensure delivery of a high-quality service that provides optimal clinical results. We provide specialist imaging examinations for Paediatric patients including plain x-ray, dental, fluoroscopy, theatre, and ultrasound. Cross Sectional Imaging for paediatric patients is performed within the Imaging department at the Royal Sussex County Hospital and these teams would benefit from support and advice from specialised Paediatric radiographers.
  • On a day-to-day basis, work closely with the Paediatric Radiology team in plain x-ray, theatre and fluoroscopy. The core service is currently operational between 8.30am and 6pm Monday to Friday, with services outside of these hours provided by a team of out-of-hours radiographers supported with specialist training from the Paediatric radiographers.
  • Value and apply diversity and inclusion principles, supporting the Trust’s patient-first ethos and Wellbeing Programme for staff.
  • Maintain and advance clinical knowledge in paediatric imaging to ensure correct imaging examinations are performed and communicated effectively to patients and families.
  • Liaise with Paediatric Consultant Radiologists and Advanced Practitioners where clinical input is needed; work cohesively with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Ensure a safe working environment and adherence to Employers Procedures, Local Rules, HCPC standards, Health and Safety at Work Act, and local policies and procedures.
  • Ensure departmental adherence to IR(ME)R 2017, IRR 2017, MRHA MRI safety guidelines and the Trust’s policies, protocols and guidelines.
  • Effectively use hospital software including CRIS, PACS, and Bamboo to maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records.
  • Understand local escalation procedures for incidents and, if appropriate, report them using DATIX or notify a senior member of staff and/or equipment service companies.
  • Participate in the 24/7 rota; core hours are Monday to Friday at the Royal Alex, with additional shifts possible at the Royal Sussex County Hospital (both on the same site).
Communication and Collaboration
  • Communicate effectively with children and young people with varying needs and development levels; promote a patient-focused service to convey information to patients, parents or carers and non-radiology colleagues to minimise stress and radiation dose.
  • Be able to communicate complex or sensitive information empathetically and clearly; communicate effectively with clinicians and referrers, answering queries or providing advice and escalating where appropriate.
  • Support rotational radiographers and junior colleagues to develop their paediatric imaging practice.
