Job summary

A leading engineering recruitment agency is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join a world-class engineering team in Staines-upon-Thames. This role involves designing bespoke motion control systems and ensuring compliance with performance and safety standards. Ideal candidates will have experience in technical drawing, knowledge of hydraulic systems, and a strong background in mechanical design. Qualifications

  • Experience with BS8888 for technical drawings.
  • Ability to conduct mathematical modelling for design iterations.
  • Familiarity with machinery directive 2006/42/EC.

Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senor Mechanical Design Engineer to join their world-class engineering team — contributing to the development of bespoke motion control and simulation systems used across aerospace, automotive, defence, and industrial applications worldwide.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop moderately complex mechanical assemblies and 'System Elements', adapting existing designs where appropriate
  • Produce accurate manufacturing documentation (GA's, detailed drawings, BoMs) in accordance with engineering standards (BS 8888, GD&T)
  • Ensure designs comply with performance, safety, and regulatory requirements (including UKCA/CE compliance under relevant directives)
  • Apply Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) principles to enhance cost-efficiency, serviceability, and repeatability
  • Manage design progress as a 'Lead Engineer' where required, including tracking deliverables, coordinating with supply chain, and resolving technical queries
  • Conduct design reviews, risk assessments, and provide technical support to production, suppliers, and service teams
  • Maintain project documentation, technical files, and contribute to the company's continuous improvement initiatives
  • Support design validation, including assembly procedures and verification hardware for testing
  • Mentor junior engineers and help capture design knowledge within internal libraries and guidelines.
Experience Required
  • Reading and creation of technical drawings to BS8888
  • Mathematical modelling to aid design iteration of mechanical components
  • Design & selection of rotating machinery parts; shafts, gears, lubrication, bearings, materials
  • Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems
  • Designing to machinery directive 2006/42/EC
  • Finite Element Analysis (linear static & fatigue)
  • Technical writing
  • Administration
