Rubicon Consulting is currently recruiting for a Senior HV Cable Engineer on a 6 month contract based in Birmingham.
Responsibilities
- Prepare technical/equipment specification documentation.
- Execute complex assignments requiring the use of advanced techniques, resulting in the development of new or improved processes, equipment, and/or technological methods.
- Undertake consultancy role on FEED stage projects, including production of technical reports and presentations.
- Maintain compliance to CDM Regulations and all other legal and regulatory requirements associated with the nature of substation EHV Cable system design.
- Undertake technical quality assurance reviews and provide design approval/sign-off on EHV Cable related designs and deliverables.
- Work closely with other sections within the UK T&D Engineering Team, particularly the Consulting Section, to enable effective collaboration on multi-disciplinary projects and facilitate an optimal engineering function in the UK business.
- Maintain technical compliance to applicable design management standards, processes, and procedures on all work delivered.
- Assist with developing and implementing policies, processes, procedures, standards, and technical guidance, as required, to continually improve the engineering capability within the EHV Cable discipline.
- Plan and support client meetings relating to EHV Cable systems, as required.
- Support the preparation of project proposals and tender presentations.
- Drive 'Safety by Design' approach on all projects, always.
- Support nurturing of a safety and technical excellence culture through emphasis on staff competence, diligence, and responsible attitude.
- Understand wider industry best practices and client technical standards/procedures for construction, operations & maintenance, and decommissioning to drive safety, constructability, and operability throughout whole asset lifecycles.
- Maintain project compliance to our UK Integrated Management System (IMS).
- Support nurturing of world-class customer service culture to drive client success.
- Be an ambassador for the company by adhering to high ethical and moral standards and the Code of Conduct.
- Provide support for the continued professional development of less experienced engineers in the team, including technical guidance and recommending training needs to the Substation EHV Cable Section Manager.
- Actively support marketing and business development activities, building relationships with client technical contacts to aid generating new business and elevating the brand.
- Identify new skills and competencies required within the team to meet business needs and actively support development and recruitment of talent.
- Act as an industry Senior Designer in EHV Cable System design and contribute to relevant professional bodies and industry groups. Maintain CPD.
- Support or lead portions of EHV Cable section meetings.
- Interpret and support establishing policies, procedures, and strategic goals of the organisation.
- Assist in determining section objectives and requirements, organise projects and develop standards and guidelines.
- Demonstrate creativity, foresight, and judgment in anticipating and solving problems.
- Advance and develop design tools and workflows to increase efficiency of designs, specification development, and project execution.
Requirements
- Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering or related degree from an accredited program, and 7 years of EHV Cable System Design & engineering experience in the electricity transmission & distribution sector, with at least 4 of those years on UK transmission system related projects.
- Membership of a relevant professional Engineering Institution (e.g., IET, CIGRE, IEC, IEEE).
- Relevant Health & Safety qualification (e.g., IOSH Managing Safely, NEBOSH Cert./Dip., NVQ Level 3+ in H&S related subject).
Desirable
- Familiar with cable rating software e.g. Crater, Cymcap, Etap, Cableizer.
- Substation safety and access training (e.g., NSI 30, BESC: AIM).
- Formal training in CDM 2015, Construction Safety, and Impressed Voltages.
- Knowledge of engineering design management best practices and ability to implement this knowledge.
- Understanding of UK Health & Safety legislation relating to design and construction work in the electricity supply industry.
- Understanding of UK Environmental and Waste Management legislation.
- Thorough understanding of current Construction (Design & Management) Regulations.
- Experience of working in a Senior substation EHV Cable design role on National Grid Electricity Transmission projects in the UK.
- Good knowledge of National Grid procedures: TP135, TP137, TP141, TP153, TP163, TP188, TP189.
- Thorough knowledge and experience applying National Grid Technical Specifications, Guidance Notes, and Design Handbooks relating to substation EHV Cable Engineering in the UK (NGTS1, 2.05, 3.05.01, 3.05.02, 3.05.03, 3.05.04, 3.05.05, 3.05.06, 3.05.07, 3.05.08, 3.05.09, 3.05.10, 3.05.11, 3.05.12, 3.05.14, SCT 36, NSI 5).
- Understanding of Impressed Voltage causes and consequences.
- Understanding of temporary works procedural control per British Standards.
- IT literacy with good knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Knowledge of applying CAD technology/software to substation EHV Cable System design.
- Excellent written & verbal communication skills.
- Strong persuasion/negotiation skills with clients and employees.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Ability to work autonomously or as part of a project team and coach/mentor others.
- Pro-active in building knowledge of the electricity transmission and distribution industry.
- Engagement in the engineering community to drive success for clients.
- Ability to develop innovative and practical solutions and understand how issues fit into larger solutions.
