Job description
Overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is offering a fixed term contract commencing December 2025 for 12 months. The role covers neurosurgery services as well as neurosciences wards and provides exposure to all aspects of neurosurgery. The department is the region\'s only tertiary centre, with a catchment area of 3 million people across south and southwest England. There are educational opportunities including theatre attendance, weekly teaching, monthly morbidity and mortality meetings, clinics and MDTs, and broad experience in functional neurosurgery.

Responsibilities
  • Cover neurosurgery services and neurosciences wards; gain experience in all aspects of surgery with a primary focus on functional surgery, including Spinal Cord Stimulator (SCS) devices and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS).
  • Work at consultant level during the year, running lists and clinics independently as well as under supervision to aid transition from trainee to independent consultant practice.
  • Take part in educational activities and audit/research; attend courses pertinent to Functional Neurosurgery and local courses to enhance leadership, teaching and interview skills in preparation for consultant appointment.
  • Participate in study leave for relevant courses; support for CPD and ongoing professional development through an educational framework with a named educational supervisor.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • GMC registration (with licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential; successful applicants will already have GMC registration or be eligible.
  • Minimum of 6 years of Specialty training and hold relevant higher specialty exams (e.g., FRCP, FRCA, FRCS).
  • A portfolio of evidence demonstrating progression criteria in line with the Curriculum for the specialty.
  • Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interviews.
  • Applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship should ensure they meet Home Office criteria prior to applying.
Salary, terms and conditions
  • Basic salary MT04 £65,048; MT05 £73,992, with pay points linked to the grade as set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular.
  • Salary assessed based on experience and skills; nodal point 5 eligibility criteria include 6 years of specialty training and higher exam requirements.
  • Appointment under local contractual terms for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists); educational framework and CPD support available; annual appraisal and GMC revalidation requirements apply.
  • On-site terms include full-time work with no on-call duties; the role operates under co-supervision of the named supervisor.
