Job description
Senior Highway Development Engineer

Are you an experienced andmotivated Engineer looking for your next challenge? Join our Highway Development team at Peterborough City Council and play a key role in shaping the future of one of the UK’s most dynamic cities.

As a unitary authority and growth city, we offer a unique opportunity to work on a diverse range of projects. You will represent the Local Highway Authority and be involved in every stage of development, from initial planning applications to the delivery of new adoptable streets and innovative Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) solutions.

In this role, you will provide specialist highway advice on planning applications, from minor developments to major schemes, and undertake detailed technical assessments of Section 38/278 highway agreements. You will collaborate with developers, planners, and contractors to ensure high‑quality, sustainable infrastructure and contribute to innovative solutions that support Peterborough’s growth and environmental ambitions.

We are looking for someone with strong analytical skills and the ability to identify practical solutions. You should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, be able to work under pressure, manage priorities, and use your own initiative. Most importantly, you will thrive as part of a collaborative team. Experience in highway engineering and development control is essential.

Joining us means being part of a friendly, supportive team based at Dodson House, which is easily accessible via the A1 and Peterborough’s superb parkway system. You will benefit from flexible working arrangements, including home‑working days under our agile working policy, and enjoy continuous opportunities to grow your knowledge and experience in a fast‑paced, evolving environment.

We would be particularly interested in applications from those with experience in highway development control or with extensive experience in technical design of highway engineering projects.

If you have any questions about the role and would like an informal discussion, please contact Nick Greaves at nick.greaves@peterborough.gov.uk.
