A leading energy supplier in the UK is seeking a Senior Design Engineer Mechanical to oversee the design and integration of electric machine drive compressor projects. The role involves managing design teams and ensuring compliance with engineering standards while contributing to the decarbonisation of the gas network. Gas Networks Ireland operates and maintains Ireland’s €3bn, 14,758km national gas network, which is considered one of the safest and most modern renewables-ready gas networks in the world.
Almost 720,000 Irish homes and businesses trust Ireland’s gas network to provide efficient and reliable energy to meet their heating, cooking, manufacturing and transport needs.
The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy and over 40% of the country’s electricity generation.
Gas Networks Ireland is aiming to deliver a repurposed, resized and fully decarbonised gas network by 2045. Its “Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network” envisions transforming the existing gas network into two separate systems carrying 100% renewable gas, one dedicated to biomethane and the other to green hydrogen, with the potential to carry approximately 30% biomethane and 70% green hydrogen, as well as offering significant long term energy export opportunities.

Gas Networks Ireland is now seeking to appoint two Senior Design Engineers to primarily work on the design and integration of electric machine drive compressor projects. However, flexibility and the willingness to work on other compressor projects may be necessary.
The Design Delivery function within Gas Networks Ireland is responsible for producing detailed designs and identifying work prerequisites including material requirements. Design Delivery utilise business partners such as engineering service providers or contracting entities to support the delivery of the design programme.
Gas Networks Ireland has pledged to reduce Green House Gas Emissions by 50% by 2030. A key aspect to this pledge is the addition of Electric Machine Driven (EMD) Compressors in Scotland to provide compression for our gas network replacing the existing gas fired compressors. Working within the Design Delivery function and reporting to the Design Delivery Lead – SWSOS Decarbonisation, the Senior Design Engineer will work on Gas Networks Ireland’s Decarbonisation Projects in Scotland and will have responsibility for the detailed design of the Electric Machine Drive Compressors and associated components such as suction and discharge pipework, coolers, metering etc. The Senior Design Engineer will manage the mechanical design of the EMD and also input into the technical aspects of the tendering process. The successful candidate will maintain levels of expertise ensuring engineering excellence through the engineering design process. All design work whether completed in house or by approved entities follows the requirements of GNI’s Engineering Design Manual. The Senior Design Engineer will work closely with other Senior Designers to ensure alignment of the design process, procedures, methodology to ensure consistency of design across the gas network.
Oversee a team of seconded engineers and engineering service providers to deliver the design of the decarbonisation capital works to meet programme timelines.
