Senior Clinical Fellow in Critical Care

This is a 12-month, senior clinical fellow post in Prince Charles Hospital (PCH) Intensive Care Unit (ITU). This is a full-time role open to applicants with GMC registration and at the equivalent level of ST3+. The post is primarily based in PCH, adult ITU with the opportunity for cross-site work in sister units. The ITU at PCH is established for 10 beds (6 level 3 and 4 level 2), with plans to expand to 12 beds in Autumn 2026 when the PCH ITU new build is complete (on the same site). The unit has two resident on call rotas: an airway rota (rota 1) and a non-airway rota (rota 2). The successful candidate will be expected to work on rota 1 and be part of a 1:8 on-call rota, with a 40 hour week job plan, with enhanced payment for the on-call commitment. The postholder will be working in a consultant-led district general intensive care unit and will gain experience in different organ support modalities including respiratory, cardiovascular and renal support. The postholder will work both day and night on calls in ITU, providing care for the patients in the unit as part of a multidisciplinary team. The postholder will be required to work resident shifts including long days, nights and weekends. They will also be a key member of the cardiac arrest team. Normal working days will be predominantly based in Main Theatres on Anaesthetic lists with consultant supervision as appropriate.

This post is fixed term for up to 12 months due to structural changes.

Main Duties and Responsibilities The post holder will work on a 1 in 8 on call rota as the senior, airway trained resident doctor. The post holder will liaise closely with the consultants with regards to patient management, referrals, admissions and discharges from the unit. The primary responsibility of the post holder is to contribute to the smooth running of the intensive care unit under consultant supervision. The post holder will have day sessions with the Theatre, providing anaesthesia for routine surgical cases under the supervision and/or direction of Anaesthetic Consultants. The post holder must be aware of clinical governance and clinical risk management and take an active part in their implementation

Other Duties And Responsibilities The post holder will be required to co-operate with local management in the efficient running of services and are expected to share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management. In addition, it should be noted that a clinical directorate structure is in operation, which requires close co-operation and liaison with colleagues as appropriate. There is a requirement to work within the financial and other constraints decided upon by the Health Board. Additional expenses of any kind must not be comminized without the approval of the appropriate manager/budget holder. Subject to the Terms and Conditions of Service, the post holder will be expected to observe policies and procedures of the Health Board, drawn up in consultation with the professions where they involve clinical matters. The post holder will be expected to comply with local and national employment and personnel policies and procedures in the management of employees of the Health Board. The post holder will be required to ensure that arrangements are in place for the organisation of medical staff and that they are allocated duties in accordance with the work of the department.

Qualifications
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (UK) with license to practice
  • Completed core training in ICM or anaesthesia (or equivalent)
  • Possession of RCoA Initial Assessment of Competencies (IAC)
  • Possession of RCoA Initial Assessment of Competencies (IAC)
  • FRCA/MRCP/FFICM Part 1 or equivalent
