Job summary

A local authority in the South-West is seeking an experienced Education Lawyer for a 3-month locum contract, starting immediately. The role involves providing expert legal advice regarding Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and managing complex tribunal cases. Responsibilities

  • Triage tribunal and mediation casework.
  • Hold complex tribunal cases – prepare and attend hearings.
  • Provide advice and support across the wider SEND team.

Overview

Our client, a Local Authority based in the South‑West, is currently recruiting for an Education Lawyer on a 3‑month locum contract. The position is due to start immediately on a full‑time basis, but part‑time applicants are welcome. The hourly rate is circa £55 p / hour via an umbrella company, which may be negotiable based on experience and expectations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide expert legal advice, representation and case management on matters relating to Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
  • Support the Council’s statutory duties under the Children and Families Act 2014 and related legislation, ensuring lawful, fair and effective decision‑making in the best interests of children and young people.
  • Complete weekly case management with Senior Assessment Officers, holding tribunal and mediation casework, supporting and advising on key decisions.
  • Triage tribunal and mediation casework.
  • Hold complex tribunal cases – prepare and attend hearings.
  • Provide advice and support across the wider SEND team and deliver training.
  • Compile quality‑assuring bundles.
Experience & Qualifications
  • Qualified solicitor or suitably qualified Legal Executive.
  • Significant experience within Education law, particularly in Local Government.
  • Experience with complex Education / SEN legal matters.
  • Recent experience required.
