Are you a compassionate and dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant looking to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs? We have an exciting opportunity for you to join one of our specialist SEMH schools in the Wakefield (WF3) area. This rewarding role offers the chance to support students who face unique emotional and behavioural challenges, helping them to build confidence, regulate their emotions, and engage positively in learning.

Our SEMH school in Wakefield is committed to providing a nurturing, supportive, and inclusive environment that meets the individual needs of every student. We specialise in helping pupils with complex SEMH needs and behavioural difficulties, offering personalised interventions and trauma‑informed approaches. As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will be part of a collaborative and passionate team dedicated to improving students' wellbeing and educational outcomes.

The Role
  • Provide tailored 1:1 and small‑group support to help students access the curriculum and develop effective coping strategies.
  • Use positive behaviour support and de‑escalation techniques to promote a calm and safe learning environment.
  • Build trusting relationships, offer emotional guidance, and help students develop resilience, self‑regulation, and improved self‑esteem.
  • Work in partnership with teachers, parents/carers, and external professionals to ensure consistent and holistic support for each student.
  • Team Teach training is desirable but not essential; successful candidates will receive free Team Teach training.
Requirements
  • Experience as an SEMH Teaching Assistant or in a similar role supporting students with SEMH or behavioural needs.
  • Strong empathy, patience, and commitment to helping young people overcome social and emotional barriers.
  • Confident communicator with the ability to build positive and trusting relationships.
  • Adaptable and able to work effectively as part of a supportive team.
  • Understanding of behaviour management approaches is advantageous, though full training will be provided.
